Mash West, Harare win basketball titles

HARARE - Mashonaland West and Harare Province won this year’s Nash Under-17 basketball titles in the boys and girls sections respectively over the weekend.

Mashonaland West select basketball team beat Harare Province 34-26 in the finals to win the prestigious schools basketball title in the boy’s category.

In the semi-finals, Mash West beat Bulawayo 39-16 to storm into the finals while Harare Province outclassed Mashonaland East Province 27-16 to progress to the finals.

In the girl’s category, Harare Province won the title after walloping Mashonaland West Province 34-8 in the final.

Harare Province put up a spirited performance to win 35-30 a closely contested semi-final against Mashonaland East to sail through to the final.

Mashonaland West also won a titanic battle in the semi-final beating Bulawayo Province 37-34 to progress.

In the Individual awards, Tichaona Chin’anya from Mashonaland West province (Cornway College) was crowned the most valuable player in the boy’s category while the most valuable player in the girl’s category went to Melody Chipwanya from Harare province.

Gideon Sadazi, the Mashonaland West Nash head in charge of basketball, who is also headmaster of Cornway College, praised his boys for winning the title.

“We have good preparations coming into this event, as a province we held training camps preparing for this event and I think we deserved to win the title because we worked hard in preparing for the tournament,” Sadazi told the Daily News after the event.

“The competition was very exciting and I think this is one of the best tournaments in terms of competition, I want to thank the organizers of this event they are doing a good job.

“For the talent of the juniors, I think as a country we need to put more resources on these juniors in order to develop the game from grass root level, we have good talented juniors.”

Meanwhile, Nash has successfully selected the basketball team to represent the country at the Cosassa Games to be held in Zambia.

Cornway College have the biggest number of representatives in the team after seven of their players were selected.
