St John's clinch Schools hockey title

BULAWAYO - St John's College are the champions of this year’s Schools Hockey Super 12 tournament after beating Falcon College 1-0 in closely-fought match at Khumalo Hockey Stadium in Bulawayo on Saturday evening.

The Rams had their midfielder Peter Landsay to thank after he scored in the second half to win the prestigious schools hockey title

During the first half, the game swung from one end to another with both teams squandering a number of chances.

In the second half, Harare’s St John’s started to control the game and were duly rewarded a few minutes before the end of the game with a superb diving deflection goal to end Falcon’s unbeaten run at the tournament.

In the semi-finals, St John’s beat their city rivals St George’s College 2-1 to storm into the finals while Falcon beat stubborn Hippo Valley 3-1 in the other semi-final.

Hippo Valley finished in third place after beating St George’s 1-0 in the third and fourth play-offs.

The Masvingo-based school put up a spirited performance, controlling the game and could have scored at least three goals but they failed to utilise their chances.

Peterhouse, who were also firm favourites to clinch the title, failed to impress at the event and were knocked out in the group stages.

After the event, St John’s coach Niall Lumilner was delighted by his team’s performance.

“It’s good to win as the coach, I am very happy with this achievement,” Lumilner told the Daily News.

“The performance of the boys was very good; however, it was a tough game in the final, I want to thank my boys.”
