Suspension of KLM flights a big loss

EDITOR — Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) had provided a rare opportunity to us by including Harare among its flight destinations.

The suspension of the service is a big blow to this nation as it had provided a window for tourist travel.

Amsterdam is a major tourist depot and it was only a matter of time before tourists travelled between Amsterdam and Harare.

The window closed before it could be capitalised upon and this has deprived us economically.

Tourists still need motivation to travel to our country as they have been avoiding us for some time now.

The tourism industry has plans to increase revenue sources but it can not be achieved without reliable transportation links.

I do not understand why the flights have been cancelled but I hope it is for a rational cause.

Zimbabwe’s economy in a massive deflationary mode and the credit crunch is biting into the pockets of the poor everyday.

The tourism industry has a potential to contribute towards our Gross Domestic Product but I guess we were not sufficiently equipped to tap into the
European tourism market.

Meanwhile, we should have a plan on how to increase revenue sources.

Dubai is a major tourist destination and its economy thrives on tourism.

We have many tourist attractions and should find out how we can benefit from it.
