Lock Zim's last hope at ITF tourney

HARARE - Zimbabwe junior tennis ace Courtney Lock is the only local player remaining in the ongoing ITF 18 and Under South Central African Junior Circuit after progressing to the semi-final stage here yesterday.

Lock outclassed fellow countryman Tadiwa Chinamo 6-3, 6-3.

Another Zimbabwe representative in the boys category, Alwyn Mushonga, bowed out of the event after he went down to Ouattara Gueninle Abdoul Karir of Ivory Coast 7-5, 6-0 to leave Zimbabwe’s hopes pinned on Lock.

The top seed will now face Egypt’s El Sallaly Akram, who won a titanic battle against Botswana’s Innocent Tidimane 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-2.

What will make Lock and Akram’s match more interesting is that Akram beat highly-rated Zimbabwean Mark Chigaazira 6-0, 5-7, 7-6(5) in the third round and Lock will be out for revenge.

Also in the girls’ category, Zimbabwe’s representative Nicole Dzenga knocked out of the tournament after she went down to  Ukraine’s Andrieieva Oleksandra 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(6).
