All set for inter-provincial basketball champs

HARARE - The Zimbabwe Basketball Union is set to pick its final Under-17 teams to compete in the upcoming Cossasa Games when the country’s 10 provincial select sides converge at Queen Elizabeth this weekend.

The Confederation of Schools Sport Associations of Southern Africa (Cossasa) games will be staged in Zambia at the end of August.

Zimbabwe’s girls’ and boys’ teams will go into the tournament having both won gold at the ball games held last year.

And event director Simeon Lawson is expecting to match those two teams potential when at least 240 fledgling basketball players strut out their skills in the interprovincial tournament this weekend.

“By the end of the weekend we would have picked the two girls’ and boys’ teams that will represent Zimbabwe at the Cossasa games,” Lawson said.

“We will come up with two teams of 20 boys and 20 girls, although we will only be travelling with 12 players from each category.”

Lawson paid tribute to the selection process saying it was the reason why Zimbabwe kept reaping rewards at the regional competition.

The Cossasa Games are a Sadc initiative to develop sport in the region.

The games provide a platform for talent identification that is expected to form the foundation for future national teams.
