Petrol heads set for super-charged Telecel Drag Racing

HARARE - South African rail car driver Reg Murray will be the star attraction of the penultimate Telecel 2014 Drag Racing Series set for Donnybrook Racetrack tomorrow.

Tomorrow’s event will see a host of drag racing competitors putting their racing skills to the test over the quarter-mile Donnybrook track, living petrol heads in for some adrenaline-charged action.

“The Dragpro Club are delighted to be welcoming Reg Murray back this year as they intensify their efforts to attract foreign competitors to the Zimbabwean Drag Racing platform,” said Dragpo club secretary Susan Zevgolis.

A wide variety of vehicles is again expected to be on show, ranging from V8 powered Cobras, turbocharged Subarus, Skylines, Mercs to BMWs.

The battle between Les Carlsson and Phil Archenoul in the motorcycle class is one to watch out for as well as the grudge matches pitting regular bike competitors.

Zevgolis said the Dragpro Club had stepped up efforts to lure more foreign competitors by improving rules and regulations.

To this end, is set to be effected tomorrow which will see the restriction of public at the start line.

“This regulation has been implemented out of necessity and is introduced with the best interests of competitors and spectators alike,” said Adam Saiyd, Dragpro Club official.

“The facilities we have are perhaps not as ideal as they could be for accommodating the large numbers of racing fans….we do hope in the future to be able to improve infrastructure in order to better accommodate our racing fans.

“In the interim we are doing our utmost to provide the best facilities within our capabilities for the fans and competitors and are grateful for the co-operation of everyone in adapting to and accepting these changes,” he added.                                            

Saturday’s event will kick off at 11:00am with driver training/instruction for first-time competitors racing commencing 30 minutes later.

Racing enthusiasts will be treated to grudge matches and qualifiers from which the ultimate goal being to record their fastest time.

This event will be followed at 3.30 pm by the handicap racing event where cars from different classes go up against each-other.

The final event of the day is the popular eliminator event where competitors pit against each other in knock-out races until the fastest car and motorcycle respectively are crowned Top Eliminators of the day.

The event also offers the Sound Off event.

“The culture of Audio City's Sound Off competition continues to grow in popularity with numbers steadily increasing,” said Zevgolis.

“We have heard the loudest cars and the most eye catching sound installs, and more continue to storm in. The competition has also become a meeting point for sound enthusiasts to share ideas with professionals and on the other hand fully complimenting the drag racing event.

“Come along to Donnybrook this Saturday either as a competitor or a spectator to enjoy a fun and exciting day for the whole family.

“There will be full bar and catering, entertainment for the kids and stalls.  The 2014 Drag Racing Series is partnered by Telecel, hp lubes/Castrol, Turbo Solutions Africa, Financial Gazette, DHL and Autobusiness.”
