Chidyamakono defend Copa title

HARARE - Chidyamakono High School confirmed their growing status girls’ football giant after claiming the COPA Coca-Cola title for a second consecutive time at the weekend.

Primrose Musiwa's first half strike proved the difference as Chidyamakono ran out 1-0 winners over St Francis in the final.

For their triumph, Chidyamakono walked home $3 000 richer.

Chidyamakono coach Yeukai Chiruva was ecstatic to see her side extend their dominance on this age-grade tournament.

“We lost against Chidzikwe in the provincials, so we were determined to rectify our shortcomings,” said Chiruva.

"We were also encouraged by the support we got from our school, ever since our triumph last year we have had tremendous support," he said Chiruva whose team travelled at the back of a truck for last year’s provincial finals.

En route to this year’s final, the rural school topped group C after accounting for Gato 3-0 they went on to discard Chilisa.

In the semi-final, Chidyamakono beat Vinona while St Francis despatched Chidzikwe in the other last four encounter.

In individual prizes, Buhlemkoso Zulu of Magwegwe was voted the best player of the tournament while Sophia Mlambo from Chidyamakono was crowned the best goalkeeper.

The Golden Boot award went to Lorrain Nyanjara of St Francis.

Gato Secondary School was crowned the most disciplined school to walk away with $500.
