War Veterans in land row

GWERU - War veterans in Gweru are currently embroiled in a bitter row over Kanuka Farm which was seized from a white farmer last year, amid allegations of corruption involving top Zanu PF officials.

The farm at the centre of the storm, was invaded by war veterans last year; but invaders have been fighting since the land grab.

Beneficiaries of the invasion were reportedly allocated 10 hectares each, while the remaining land was reserved for gold claims, reportedly owned by Zanu PF bigwigs in Midlands.

A source who declined to be named, alleged that the district administrator (DA) Shepherd Marwei received bribes from elements within the war veterans’ camp to short change the ones who invaded the land first.

Tinga invader farm kuti mawar vets apinde? (Why should we invade a farm for other war vets?). I financed that project. Why is it that 10 years after the land reform programme, war vets are still getting first preference over ordinary people?

“I saw the District Administrator and he said he was going to look at it, but he hasn’t done anything,” the source said adding that he had allocated his relatives.

He reportedly promised the prejudiced war veterans land elsewhere.

When contacted for comment, Marwei refuted bribery allegations, referring this reporter to the land committee, which he ironically chairs.

“Go and talk to the district land committee, they are responsible,” he said, before hanging up.

Further attempts to secure his comment were fruitless as an irate Marwei said he had no business of talking to the press about the matter.

Gweru War Veterans publicity and information secretary only identified as Bhebhe, confirmed the fracas among liberation war fighters.

“Some of the people who engaged in the invasion last year did not benefit. I suspect foul play in the matter. They were promised pieces of land elsewhere, but nothing has happened yet,” he said.

Its unbelievable that the people allow this gangster to do this , I mean how many brave men does it take! What are you waiting for? Invade the land and fight ! You are War Veterans aren't you? Or are you just useless, cowardly children who flinch when a dog like Marwei bites. If that is so you don't deserve the land!
