Dog eat dog in MDC

HARARE -  It is dog eat dog in the MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai as party heavyweights seek to outsmart each other ahead of a congress slated for October.

While Tsvangirai’s position looks secure, there is no smooth sailing for people like the organising secretary Nelson Chamisa, party vice president Thokozani Khupe and some senior members, whose positions have been secure for a long time.

Although Chamisa denies eying the secretary general’s post which was left vacant after the expulsion of Tendai Biti, reports indicate that he will fight it out with current party spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora for the powerful post.

Yesterday, the charismatic Chamisa was coy, saying he is in the struggle to serve the people and not for positions.

“I am not waiting for anything. Our struggle can never be reduced to a struggle for positions as it is bigger than positions. It is about entrenching the fundamental freedom, restoring dignity to all Zimbabweans. I am very comfortable with the service that I am giving, my passion is to serve, my passion is to make contributions,” said Chamisa.

Asked whether he would take up the challenge if nominated, he said,

“When nominations are done we obviously have to go for congress.”

His perceived rival Mwonzora, said he is waiting for the nominations.

“The nominations for positions in the standing committee are going to come from the provinces, they are not out yet and I have no intentions of contesting for the secretary general post because I have not been nominated. Right now, I am concentrating on my current job as the party spokesperson and am fighting Zanu PF.”

To add intrigue to the struggle for ascendancy in the MDC, names like Tapiwa Mashakada the acting secretary general have also been thrown into the mix to fill the powerful post that Biti left.

Theresa Makone the current chairperson for the Women’s Assembly, who has close ties to the donor community, is likely to go for the treasurer general’s post but again sources say Mashakada might challenge her.

Former Labour minister Paurina Mpariwa has also stepped in to fill the Women’s Assembly chair post but she will have to slug it out with Sibusisiwe Masara the current secretary general.

On the other hand Khupe, will have to have to dig deep if she is to return her posts, sources in the MDC said but she is favourite to sail through.

Chamisa told the Daily News that the impending congress will also deliberate on constitutional matters amid indications that the MDC is likely to make amendments that will dovetail its constitution with that of the country which has two vice presidents.

The current vice chairperson Morgen Komichi reportedly fancies his chances of taking the vice presidency post.

Komichi has reportedly already started campaigning for the post amid indications that other names will emerge to challenge him.

There are several positions up for grabs left vacant by the ejection of some top dogs who left the mainstream MDC to form the renewal camp.

These include the treasurer general’s post formerly held by Roy Bennett, youths assembly president vacated by Solomon Adore, Harare Province and Bulawayo province chairpersons, left behind by Paul Madzore and Gorden Moyo respectively.

Clifford Hlatshwayo, Happymore Chidziva and James Chidhakwa, have already started campaigning for youth league presidency.

Abednico Bhebhe, Murisi Zwizwai, Thamsanqa Mahlangu and Amos Chibaya are all eying to take over as the party organising secretary come congress if Chamisa goes for the secretary-general’s post.

Bhebhe is my choice he is fearless and working hard in trying to remove tribal dominance which was brought into this country by Mugabe .Only those who are tribalists can hate him .Guqula izenzo for a better future.

Diibulaanyika - 19 July 2014

Bhebhe is not for tribalism but for equal opportunity. Every time a Ndebele speaking person tries to stand for equal representation he/she is accused of tribalism. It is not tribalism when shona speaking people sweep all the posts. To hell with that let us crush this tribalism thing and begin to look at each other as mere people without dividing lines!

We don't care how many vice presidents you are going to have or who they they are going to be. What we know is that they are only party officers not national leaders. Zviroto zviroto, ngazvipere kuhope!!!

Politics dzechi vanhu dzandikandisa mapfumo pasi. Ma leaders anongo nyepa hakuna anobvunza. I noticed that in stable free market democracies the leaders cannot afford to lie to the nation - they will be hell to pay if they lie. But in tinpot totalitarian tumultuous tyrannies like Zimbabwe leaders can lie as much as they like nobody ever dares to question them. White governments rarely lied. They had no reason to lie. We blacks are liars by nature. Lying is not confined to politicians only even the men of cloth lie as well while delivering sermons on morality. Zvimwe zvacho ndinowona sekunge misoro isingatore zvakanaka. Some do no care whether you know they are lying: they just carry on lying. I was reading what Mugabe said on Wednesday at the so-called Heroes Acre and was shaking my head in utter disbelief. Mugabe took a swipe on Europeans who came to Africa as missionaries to colonise the continent. He said it was amazing that the whites decided to convene the Berlin Colonial Conference in 1884-5 to partition Africa amongst themselves as if it was a continent without people. You know what? It was the European missionaries who paid young Mugabe's school fees at Kutama when his own father abandoned the family home in the 1930s! His school fees was paid by an Irish Father Jerome O'hea. The irony is those who were sponsored by the whites are the ones who pretend to be outspoken critics of those whites who mothered them in their time of need. Trying to cover up I suppose. I don't know of any Zimbabwean politician who is not a liar.

Musona - 19 July 2014

@Musona, Robert Mugabe is a hypocrite. If the truth be told, he owes 90% of his life to the whites he now unashamedly denigrates at every opportunity. Its a shame that having been abandoned by his own womanising and totally irresponsible father and having been literary raised by the whites at Kutama, he wants to tell the world how bad those same whites were. Please murume mukuru ngaanyarewo. You only have to look at his penchant for western luxuries. Before he was banned by EU where was his favourite shopping destination? It was not South Africa or Nigeria. We all know that. Look at his motorcade. Look at his designer suits. Look at his mansion in Borrowdale Brook. Listen to Mugabe speaking English. He tries so hard to live his life life a British monarch. We want to tell him that the queen in England allows free elections, she does not interfere with the democratic principles, rights of citizens and the State's responsibilities to its citizens. The queen in Britain allows self determination of her subjects. Mugabe took over a jewel with everything functioning. Thirty years down the line nothing is working. Mugabe must simply shut up! ZANU apologists where are you? Defend your moronic tyrant. Issues, issues no directionless garbage or sloganeering.
