Tynwald Primary Choir student shines

HARARE - Munesuishe Gumbura, a grade six student at Tynwald Primary School, has charmed seasoned jazz musician Bob Nyabinde at the launch of the school’s debut album Tiri Kufara on Friday.

Gumbura convinced all and sundry that he is destined for a brilliant musical career.

“I saw massive talent in Gumbura,” said Nyabinde before inviting him on stage where they performed together the hit song Chabuda Hapana.

Nyabinde was the guest of honour at the event, which was attended by parents and other supporting schools.

Gumbura’s mother Choice Neganda, who was accompanied by some of her sisters-in-law, was happy to see his son strumming the bass guitar alongside Nyabinde.

“I felt like crying  seeing my son performing alongside one of the greatest musicians Nyabinde and I am proud of him,” she said.

“When he mastered the art of playing the bass guitar at church, I did not know that he would go this far.”

Gumbura plays the bass guitar in the school band, which has launched a five-track project.

Songs making the album include Handigoni Kutaura, Tiri Kufara, Zita Renyu Jesu and Jehovah. The songs were composed by their teacher Moffat Gambiza.

Savias Mujeri, the school head,  auctioned the CD for $50. He announced that the group is set to tour the United Kingdom (UK)in August.

“The band is made up of 22 students and all of them will leave for the UK next month for a three-week tour,” he said.

“The group will perform as well as participate in an exchange programme with schools in the UK,” he said.

Next thing he'll be touring with Leonard Mapfumo.
