Zifa condemns referee attack

HARARE - The Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) has condemned the attack on referee Mercy Maimbo by Black Rhinos Queens players Rufaro Machingura and Tariro Makumbe at the weekend.

The Black Rhinos Queens duo attacked Maimbo during the Net One Cup Final at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday in which the army side lost 5-4 on penalties to Bulawayo side Inline Academy.

“The Zimbabwe Football Association would like to condemn in strongest terms the violent attack on referee Mercy Maimbo by Black Rhinos Queens players , Rufaro Machingura and Tariro Makumbe during the Net One Cup  final on Saturday,” Zifa spokesperson Xolisani Gwesela said in a statement.

“In terms of laws of the game, referees are empowered to have a final decision and we would like to make it explicitly clear that that referees are untouchable.

“We do not condone violence and the two culprits will inevitably face the full wrath of football statutes.

“The beautiful game of football celebrates ethos of non violence and fair play, hence the rogue and violent behaviour of the two players cannot go unpunished.”

The two players were arrested on Saturday and will appear in court today.

After their court appearance the duo will also face sanctions from Zifa and they are likely to be handed lengthy bans for their behaviour.

Pliz try to train these ladies on how to referee, because on most occasions ,these female referees are poor officials. Of cause they have final say,but their decisions are full of incompetence. I don't know who deploy and train these poor female officials, some of their decision bring emotions, though i dont condone violence but ZIFA be transparent on your recruitment of these match officials. Try to recruit on perfomance based, than to confuse the country that we have female official when they is none. I am saying this because all the games i witnessed i was not convinced by their performance. even as assistance??????

This story has underlying currents far much graver than a mere game of football, judging by the media hype. Ungatofunga kuti pakafa munhu. Testimony from the Black Rhinos Players is that the official came to the centre where they were huddled and said "mamama" after denying them 3 clear goals and making horrendious decisions in front of Mai Sibanda and the Match commissioner.
