Chitungwiza Harmony Singers line up gospel concert

HARARE - Chitungwiza Harmony Singers will hold a gospel concert at the Reps Theatre in Harare from July 24 to 26 that will feature Peter Hadingham, the Lorna Kelly Studio and Zim Opera Singers.

Peter Thole, the Chitungwiza Harmony Singers marketing manager, told the Daily News that gospel music is among the many genres that his choir specialises in.

“We are not 100 percent gospel singers because we mix up,” Thole said.

“We also sing social music to entertain our audience. Originally, we sang acapella but now some of our songs are accompanied by instruments like pianos, drums, mbira and hosho to add flavour to our music,” he said. The concert will be conducted by Arnold Dzangare and George Tamisai, the choir director and choir master respectively.

The pianists who will take part in the gospel concert include Ruth Chard and Mark Hyde.

The Chitungwiza Harmony Singers choir, which can sing in 11 different languages, including Shona, Latin, German, French, Xhosa and Zulu, has represented Zimbabwe in many international competitions and events.

They participated in South Africa’s celebrations to mark that country’s first decade as an independent nation, the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, the regional and finals of the Old Mutual National Choral Festival in South Africa and the 2013 International Choral Festival in the United States of America.
