Cornway defends volleyball title

HARARE - Cornway College boys’ team successfully defended the St George’s College Under-20 Volleyball title over the weekend.

Cornway beat Churchill High school 2-0 in the final to scoop the title ahead of 18 other schools who graced the event.

In the semi-finals, the Mount Hampden-based school beat Prince Edward 2-0 to storm into the finals while Churchill beat the hosts 2-0 in the second semi –final.

Prince Edward eventually finished in third place at the tournament after beating St George’s 2-1 in the third-place play-off.

In the girls’ category which was played as in a round robin format, Mufakose 2 High finished on top of the standings ahead of second-placed Cornway while Vengere finished in third position.

St George’s Volleyball coach Beven Mugamu, the organiser of the tournament, was excited with the talent shown by the junior players on show during the weekend.

“It is our second year hosting this tournament. We are looking to have more schools next year. Last year we had 32 teams but this year we managed to host 40 teams which is a great improvement,” Mugamu told the Daily News yesterday.

“We hope to have sponsors next year, this will make our event bigger and I am also happy with the talent shown by these juniors.

St George’s was using this event to prepare a regional volleyball tournament to be held in Zambia at Zambia Olympic Centre in August.

“I am happy with the performance of my team and I think the tournament gave us a good platform to prepare for the Zambia volleyball tournament,” added Mugamu.
