Alimenda earns Pasuwa praises

HARARE - After a rather slow start to life at Dynamos, midfield hardman Stephen Alimenda seems to have finally settled at the Glamour Boys.

While the defending Castle Premiership champions might not be enjoying the best of form this season, Alimenda is one of standout performers for Calisto Pasuwa’s team.

The midfield enforcer is playing probably some of the best football of his life in the blue and white of DeMbare.

Alimenda played one of his best games for the Glamour Boys on Sunday in the 1-0 win over bitter rivals Highlanders at the National Sports Stadium.

He led the DeMbare midfield with aplomb as he played in front of defence, proving cover when his team lost possession.

The former CAPS United and Highlanders midfielder excelled in his role as he hurried the Bosso attackers every time they entered the DeMbare half.

Alimenda’s game is not all about providing the steel in midfield and winning back possession.

His passing ability seems to have improved drastically since signing for the Harare giants.

Most of DeMbare’s attacks are initiated by Alimenda, who wins possession before looking for the more talented Ronald Chitiyo or Devon Chafa.

This allows for a smooth transition between defence and attack for Pasuwa’s team, which has made DeMbare a threat on the break.

After the win over Bosso, Pasuwa was full of praise for the way Alimenda had controlled the tempo of the match.

“He is one of the senior players in the team,” Pasuwa said. “I think one thing you feel immediately is the connection between him and the crowd; they like him, they like his style of play and he is a player that we need.

“He is leading by example. He is a basic and important player for us. He has filled his position so well.”

This season, Dynamos have struggled for goals upfront and have found themselves under increasing pressure from most teams.

The defending champions need Alimenda to be at the top of his game so that he can provide the necessary cover to the back four that will be tested even more in the forthcoming matches.

Without goals, DeMbare will need a strong defence to be the foundation on which their title defence is built on.

Alimenda is proving to be the first line of that crucial defence.
