Gorden Moyo resigns

BULAWAYO - Gorden Moyo, the MDC Bulawayo provincial chairperson,  has quit his party position insisting that he was not prepared to work under conditions where people in the same party fight against each other.

Moyo, whose lack of visibility since he took a sabbatical has been subject to swirling speculation that he was prevaricating in the wake of divisions in the party, attributed his decision to stand down to inertia by the MDC to push for  the democracy project since its electoral loss in July last year.

“The leadership of the party has failed to handle well the outcome of the 2013 election,” he told a press briefing yesterday.

He said that he had found it difficult to work with people who are more concerned about looking at parochial and personal interest.

“Unfortunately, an angel of darkness visited our party. The party was wrecked by a demon and became a modern Tower of Babel where there is a lot of confusion.

Over the past months, the party has been characterised by violence and purging of our structures which are alleged to be hostile to certain individuals.”

Moyo said over the same period, MDC has ceased to prioritise serious issues of the State that affect the people, including the economy, which is in free fall and MDC is folding its hands.

“We are busy pressing the self-destructive button because (MDC) leaders are busy chasing lizards when crocodiles are against us and as MDC we are not following issues of implementation of the Constitution we are busy pressing a self-destructive button destroying ourselves,” Moyo said.

“The leadership has failed to handle the outcome of the July 31 election. I am not referring to an individual because I was part of that leadership. We have failed to handle the election outcome as we did during the 2005.”

Asked about the currently-fragmented MDC, Moyo said he  believed in democratic choices of individuals.

“I don’t believe in fragmentations. They cannot resolve the problems. I believe all (opposition) political parties should come together and forge a movement to dislodge Zanu PF. I can’t be part of those fragmentations,” Moyo said.
