Tsvangirai, Biti talks collapse

HARARE - Envisaged talks between opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and his former secretary-general Tendai Biti, have all but collapsed, with the MDC ruling out ever engaging the rebels.

A charge sheet compiled by Biti and company against Tsvangirai has dealt a mortal blow to the talks. Biti has summoned Tsvangirai to appear before his disciplinary committee on June 18, a demand spurned by Tsvangirai.

Insiders said Sekai Holland, the chairperson of the MDC’s Guardian Council, has been frantically trying to open talks between the two feuding sides but to no avail.

MDC spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora ruled out re-engagement talks.

“The MDC wishes to categorically state that there is no mediation taking place whatsoever between the party and the rebels who have now been expelled by the National Council,” Mwonzora told the Daily News yesterday.

“We note with concern the false narrative to the effect that Sekai Holland is leading mediation efforts between the MDC and the rebels led by the former secretary-general, Tendai Biti.

“In the party, Holland is the chairperson of the Guardian’s Council and has not been mandated to play any other role. In any case, the National Council of the party has not sanctioned any mediation efforts between the party and the rebels.”

Efforts to speak to Holland yesterday were fruitless.
Jacob Mafume, spokesperson of Biti’s MDC renewal team, however, backed the mediation efforts.

“Although we are not aware of such efforts, we are of the view that the Guardian Council is an important part of the party,” Mafume said.

“If it is doing something, we should let them do so. We are surprised that our counterparts are hell-bent on frustrating the council. We are waiting on what the council is doing and we will not jump the gun.”

This Mafume must be told that in the real MDC-T there is NO interest at all in his talks with Mrs.Holland. They can take her if they want. The properly constituted MDC-T is totally better off without BITI, Mangoma,Mafume,Sipepa & anyone of like mind. Please these guys must concentrate on building their 'GRAND COALITION' with Ncube,Dabengwa&Madhuku or even with ZANU PF. Our MT is too busy for your nonsense...

Morgan is showing how much he is intellectually limited. Biti might not have support but legally he will casue all sorts of problems to Tsvangirayi and his inepte team of advisers. At present Biti to Morgan is a more formidable challenger than ZANU PF and the dying Mugabe. To defeat ZANU he hsa to defeat Biti first. Tsvangirayi lacks the skill and the intellect for both

Morgan Morgan you are just a dreamer like your President Biti. Biti will never challenge the people of Zimbabwe, let alone Morgan Tsvangirai in any form. We will stand with Tsvangirai than to support Biti and his purpets. Why can't they form their Party and leave MDC-Tsvangirai. We are tired of these so called splits. Biti FORM your own Biti Democratic Change (BDC) please and leave MDC-T alone.

No,Biti is not the most able lawyer in Zimbabwe. He lost so many cases in the courts&no court can compel anyone to join Biti's useless party. MT does not need to defeat Biti as he is not fighting him in anyway. In fact it is Biti fighting MT instead of fighting to be in gvt. No one likes Biti in the real MDC-T.

You are very right Kusaziva kufa. Biti must leave MDC-T and form his own party. Fighting Tsvangirai will only make him many enemies.

Iwe munhu unozviti Morgan nyarawo kanhi. Who are you to talk of Tsvangirai 's intellect? Biti will never win an election against Tsvangirai, Nikuv or no Nikuv... Usanyeperwe, Tsvangirai is causing headaches to Mugabe and Biti alike.... Tsvangirai is the face of true change in Zimbabwe...

Biti has started the corrupt way by wanting to bribe Zuma. He is politically dead.

Mike Hove - 13 June 2014

Biti is a self expelled ex MDC member and it is hilarious when we hear that he has summoned the President of a powerful opposition party from the political wilderness he threw himself into- what a loser. The mainstream MDC should not waste it's time trying to engage that bunch and instead focus on re-building their party and reinforcing the party structures. ZANU PF is already in campaign mode, don't be hoodwinked by those fools who cost us victory and real change in 2013.

When Abraham and Lot separated it was a good thing to happen. Biti must go on and form his own party. Biti was deceived by his authority as a minister of finance in the GNU. As a result he misjudged his capacity as a leader. Being a leader of a party is different from serving as a government minister. Who's going to be the deputy president should you win the presidency? Mangoma..?
