Wasteful DeMbare edge Triangle

HARARE - Dynamos coach Calisto Pasuwa bemoaned his team’s profligacy in front of goal despite collecting maximum points with a 1-0 win over Triangle here yesterday.

Tichaona Mabvuara scored the only goal of the match in the 29th minute on a day where DeMbare strikers Patrick Khumbula and Simba Sithole took turns to miss glorious chances throughout the match.

The win moved the defending champions into third place on the log with 19 points, just one behind leaders Highlanders.

Yesterday’s win was DeMbare’s third consecutive 1-0 win but Pasuwa was disappointed with his side’s failure to score more goals.

“We are happy with the three points but again it’s the number of chances that we are missing which are costing us at the end of the day,” Pasuwa said after the match.

“Like always we need to go back and work on our shortcomings in order to improve.”

While at times they were lively with some individual performances from the likes of Ronald Chtiyo, the defending champions lacked quality in key phases of this match.

Khumbula’s substitution later in the second half was cheered loudly by the DeMbare fans while to the surprise of many, Sithole was kept in the match throughout the 90 minutes.

“We have won and its okay with us, we will see at the end of the season which team will lift the championship. There is no problem with our performance. The fact that we are winning is okay with us,” said Pasuwa.

Triangle coach Biggie Zuze while encouraged by his team’s performance feels his players lack the quality needed to compete with teams like Dynamos.

“I was happy with the performance of the team despite losing. We did our best especially in the second half where we pressed them a lot,” Zuze said.

“We couldn’t however create enough chances to win the match. We are lacking quality especially in the midfield. I think we need a holding midfielder who can play those balls”.

With yesterday’s loss, Triangle remained third from bottom with eight points and will need to start winning if they are to avoid relegation at the end of the season.

Dynamos started the match on the front foot and could have scored twice in the opening 15 minutes but Sithole was guilty of some wayward shooting.

Mabvura put DeMbare ahead with a well taken shot from the left side after getting to the end of a Chitiyo through pass.

DeMbare went on to create more scoring opportunities but they were let down by their forwards.

Triangle had a chance to level the scores in the 45th minute but Richard Kawondera hit the side netting after finding space in the box.

Walter Mukanga, who replaced Cliff Sekete in the second half, breathed life into the DeMbare midfield but Sithole and Khumbula took over from where they left in the first half.

With some luck Oscar Machapa, who replaced the injured Mabvura five minutes from time, could have capped his day with a goal but he was denied by Triangle goalkeeper Richard Mudimu.
