Mugabe savages Jonathan Moyo again

HARARE - President Robert Mugabe yesterday racheted up his withering and unexpected tirade against the minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Jonathan Moyo.

Speaking at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, at the burial of former Cabinet minister Nathan Shamuyarira, Mugabe said Zanu PF had been infested by weevils which should be taken care of.

This follows Mugabe’s brutal criticism of Moyo on Friday night when he described the minister as the “devil incarnate”.

Analysts who spoke to the Daily News on Sunday said Mugabe’s savage attack on Moyo was a clear sign that he wanted to hang on to power forever.

The analysts also pointed out that factionalism in Zanu PF had reached alarming levels that the situation could explode into an open war.

Mugabe yesterday went a gear up lashing out at Moyo, saying he was causing confusion in Zanu PF and must quit politics for football.

Political analyst Pedzisai Ruhanya said Mugabe used Moyo to win the 2013 elections but now finds no use for him.

“....First in the 2000 elections; 2008 controversial presidential rerun and the 2013 disputed elections.

“Mugabe and his coterie are very ungrateful. Were it not for Moyo and the military elite that he oils with ideas, Zanu PF and Mugabe would not have been in power today,” Ruhanya said.

“Mugabe has shown a tendency of ditching Moyo and most people aligned to the Mnangagwa camp after election despite the fact that it is this group that

uses all kinds of dirty politics for him and his party to remain in power illegitimately,” added Ruhanya.

Mugabe yesterday accused Moyo of dishonesty and lacking principled vision likening him to a skilful football player.

“Shamuyarira had a people-oriented direction when he was minister of Information and not these little ideas of how I can get so and so. Hatidi munhu anonzvengesa vanhu sebhora (We do not want people who dribble others as in football). Kana wafunga zvekunzvengesa (If you want to dribble), why don’t you go and join Highlanders or Dynamos,” Mugabe said to an applauding crowd.

Mugabe who on Friday described Moyo as a counter-revolutionary who had employed Zanu PF enemies as editors at Zimpapers yesterday claimed the party had been infiltrated.

He likened his party to grain that had been attacked by grain weevils that bore into the seed rendering it inedible saying he would speedily deal with them to save the party from total collapse.

Mugabe said Shamuyarira was a good leader and would not allow Genetically Modified Organism products (GMOs) or bad seed into the country because he was principled.

“Take care now, Shamuyarira uyu aiva murimi mukuru. VaMade vanoti ngatichengetedzei mbeu dzedu nekuti havadi maGMO. Pakati pedu pane zvipfukuto. Ndiani anoziva kunobva zvipfukuto? Ini handizive kuti zvipfukuto zvinobvepi, handizive kuti mai vazvo vakaita sei asi ndinozoongoona muchibage mangu mava nezvipfikuto,” (Shamuyarira was a great farmer. Made advises us to take care of our maize seed because he does not like GMOs. In our midst there are weevils which we do not know where they come from.)

“MuZanu mune zvipfukuto, Zanu ine zvipfukuto woye. Manje kana chipfukuto chapinda mutsanga  ingava nyemba kana chibage haichadyika wotoda chidokohori ( Zanu is full of weevils. Let us do away with these weevils and get rid of them because they make the seed inedible,” said Mugabe adding that “Let us lift our youth muparty and see kuti havapfukutwe here.” (Let us promote the youths in the party and see if they behave the same).

Mugabe stressed that his Zanu PF party was a straightforward one which understood the aspirations of the people and urged party supporters to remain united.

The nonagenarian also said information needed to be managed properly in a way that benefits the people in educating them about what the country’s leadership was doing. He slammed party leaders who treated each other as enemies when they differ forgetting to fight their common enemy — Westerners whom he said were keen on grabbing the country’s natural resources.

“Do not plant seeds to divide the people. Do not make anyone in the party a political enemy. Your ideas may differ but do not be enemies. If that is your ideology then it is a destructive ideology.”

“Your principles must be right. We are fighting outside forces. They want us to surrender our resources to them ‘‘Mugabe said.

Moyo had a fall-out with Mugabe in 2004 after the failed Tsholotsho Declaration which sought to block vice president Joice Mujuru from ascending to her current position.

The is a simple case of the Mujuru camp that is hitting back after their faction leader Mrs Mujuru appeared to be losing ground (to Mnangagwa, I guess) due to her village thinking - remember the Parastatal CEO salarygate where she appeared to say that let the CEOs enjoy those perks because there are ZANU PF.

Any true leader would naturally not deliberately saw seeds of disunity in his organisation. The president of ZANU PF clearly failed the true leadership test here. He should have addressed Jonathan in Private instead of washing his party's soiled linen in public. Another issue is this abuse of state funerals to settle political scores. If there is a dangerous dribbler the old demented man leads the pack.

Sekajaha - 8 June 2014

Mugabe accuse Moyo of "dribbling" others when he is the worst culprit! Mugabe has always been a loner with a reputation of using others for his political gain and then discarding them like used toilet paper; it is the surest way of making sure one has no friends. Still it is now is the sun-set of his life when all his past mis-chiefs are coming back to him like a swarm of locusts that he must wish he had one friend, just one, he could trust!

Moyo ndizvo, the old man is now confused and mai Mujuru is behind all this because she has been exposed, and she is the one who does not want corruption to be exposed, where are the river ranch diamonds going to, THE WOMAN IS VERY DULL, IF zanu pf ever elects her to succeed Mugabe that will be the end of the party. No right thinking zimbabwean would have that dull opportunist for a President IN THIS COUNTRY. I for sure will never stay in ZANU PF once a person of mujuru takes over. The old man is confused, remember the Masimirembwa case.

Moyo is not being victimised in this case. He has always been a loose canon overlaping into other ministerial ares which are not his. He has spoken about a new policy on Indigenisation which was his opinion and was instructing the media to put is across as already adopted. The country has an indiginisation ministry- so this is divisive. He has been meeting foreign diplomats as if he is the foreign affairs minister. All this cause unnecessary friction and commotion in the party. The guy is ambitious and has lot of energy which he is applying wrongly. Clearly he is educated but he has no wisdom. There is no factionalism in this Moyo has been doing it for his personal benefit and popularity in the long term. This guy is seeing beyond the current factionalism. It will be ill conceived to think that the President has lashed at Moyo without the necessary intelligents input. He is quite aware of what Moyo was upto. Cleary how do we explain him calling DR Gideon Gono a House Nigger? He sees his longterm challenge coming from Gono and clearly he has used the state media against him. Lets not forget Moyo's recent direct comments against his excellence remarks that Gono was being shunned by the public media. The lashing was overdue. The Excellence is correct if Moyo is clearly educated he should be humble enough not do what he has been doing otherwise he is an aggressor in all this and he has met his match. His aggression needs to be curtailed for the good of the party.

Efficience is the worst enemy in ZANU PF. Sooner than later,Jona may be out if he is lucky to go alive. Clean people are not wanted in ZANU PF:hence Nathan died a pauper. The consolation for Jona though, will be at Heroes acre.

While not necessarily supporting MugBe on his position regarding Moyo, I want to point out that Moyo lost his parliamentary seat and is in government at the discretion of Mugabe. I am surprised by the fact that the independent media now has sympathy for him. What I am alarmed by is the fact that Minister seems to have promulgated power to appoint editors. How did this Happen when there are board of directors.

How much has Zimbabwe gained in terms of credibility to the outside world and monetarily- a lot and we should be grateful to Jonathan Moyo who exposed the salarygates. Just when the European Union was reportedly starting to warm up to us as they had noticed that we are doing something about the scourge of corruption, the President steps in and lashes out at the one Minister he should instead be grateful to. Is blind loyalty worth more than weeding out corruption?

Dr Know - 9 June 2014

Everyone has an agenda. Moyo has his. He sees an opportunity and grabs it. The old man knows that very well. Moyo is not thinking low, he is paving way for Presidency. The old man has to stop him before it is too late.

Jayaguru - 9 June 2014

If our president uses the same vigor and consistency against corruption, I would applaud him. He would have moved us far as a country. But what is wrong with appointing efficient editors to national papers? After 10 years of only reading the private media, I had started buying the Sunday Mail and Herald again. Maybe it was too good to be true, this is Zimbabwe......you should only read about how good our ZANU PF is!!

Dr Tapera - 9 June 2014

Strangers see nothing wrong with a selfish child because they enjoy every destructive movement he/she makes. In any case, if one day this paper claps hands for the President, he must change whatever he is doing.

Indeed, it is Jonathan who has been using dirty tactics to save Zanu PF ever since the days of the year 2000 rejected referendum. Mugabe is the one who is greedy. He wants to use people like Jonathan to win elections. Once he is back in power he cannot afford to share the ill gotten boot with them. This man must go. He and his colleagues destroyed a once prosperous country. Zimbabweans are all over the world now with beggarly tendencies. The Zimbabweans are hardworking people with nothing to show for it. They are people with an amazing work ethic than any SA country; but now one of the poorest countries in the world. Mugabe took a country from being a bread basket of SA to a broke one. Leaders of the world must unite to oust Mugabe.

I am a Zanu PF cadre and I support Moyo hundred percent. We are now facing the possiblity of a cultural reason .Which just like the time of Chairman Mao's death symbolises the birth pangs of a nation. I respect va Mugabe but there is a problem with this kind of myopia. I am a 100 percent hardliner like Chitepo and I am aganist any form of colonialism whether by the british or chinese.
