Sables provisional squad to be named

HARARE - Zimbabwe will submit a provisional 35-man squad to the Confederation of African Rugby (Car) today from which selectors will then name a final 26-man team for July’s World Cup qualifiers in Madagascar.

A bloated squad of 57 was named last month, with the locally-based contingent training in batches in Harare and Bulawayo once every week.

Head coach Brendan Dawson has been taking the Southern Region players through their paces in Bulawayo, with his assistant Cyprian Mandenge taking care of business in Harare.

The enlarged squad of 57 is composed of both experienced players and rookies, capped and uncapped.

Back in the mix after a fall-out with team management kept them on the side-lines for over a year are prop Denford Mutamangira and flank Shingi Mpofu, who play professional rugby in the Scottish Premiership, as well as England-based scrumhalf Charles Jiji.

Fullback Danny Robertson has also been included after returning to action in the local league for champions Old Hararians.

Germany-based livewire back Manasah Sita, another long-term absentee, is also part of the Sables' plans in their quest to qualify for next year's World Cup in England.

Also named is the South African-born trio of flank Lambert Groenewald alongside the twins Ross and Guy Cronje, both halfbacks. The three, who have Zimbabwean roots, play for Golden Lions in Johannesburg.
