Zanu-PF mayor wont' resign from ZC board

HARARE - Freddy Kapuya, an active Zanu-PF official who was last year elected mayor of Redcliff, insists he will not relinquish his position as a Zimbabwe Cricket board member following his rise on the political arena.

Kapuya, who has been a ZC director since 2006, won the small Midlands town’s mayoral elections on a Zanu-PF ticket during last year’s widely disputed general elections.

A party colleague of Kapuya, Mainos Mudukuti, was also added to the ZC board in February to fill a void. Mudukuti was a Zanu-PF primary elections losing candidate in Masvingo in the run-up to the July 2013 polls.

Though ZC has vehemently denies over the years, the association has often been viewed in some quarters in the last decade as an extension of the ruling party, but not until Kapuya and Mudukuti had two certified Zanu-PF members been policymakers of the cricket body.

And queried over his continued stay on the ZC board despite his political links, Kapuya said yesterday that he saw nothing wrong with his dual roles.

“We all belong to a certain party at some stage and I feel that my association with the party that I represent should not take away my right of being a sportsperson and hold office in any sport-related industry,” Kapuya told the Daily News.

“I’m serving well in the two capacities, it’s a lot of work but I think I still have the energy and my colleagues at Zimbabwe Cricket are saying that I should continue with my work as usual.”

The ZC constitution is silent on the involvement of political figures in key positions of the organisation, but the moral question that must be answered is would an MDC official be permissible on the ZC board?

“Certainly not, that won’t be allowed to happen,” said a former leading cricket administrator. “It will cause great discomfort to a lot of people.”

Greedy people who are appointed posts through the ZANU PF patronage system have destroyed everything they touch from politics, the economy and even sports especially cricket and soccer. I bet the only Century Kapuya knows is "never in a 100 years". Please leave such posts in capable hands and concentrate on your seat which you won controversially. You can't always have the cake and eat it too.

Leave the man alone! We are all political animals in one way or another. The man has been on the ZC board long before being a Zanu PF candidate on 31/07/13. Is it a crime to declare your political affiliation? HANDS OFF!!!!
