Serial robbers jailed 11 years

BULAWAYO - Two Bulawayo men who raided more than 12 houses and got away with property close to $15 000 have been slapped with an 11-year jail term each without an option of fine.

Sothani Perfect Mudenda, 32, and Mduduzi Ngwenya, 34, pleaded guilty to the offences and were convicted on their own plea.

Magistrate Tawanda Muchemwa had sentenced the accused persons to 17 years in prison but suspended six years on condition that they do not commit the same offence.

Mudenda and Ngwenya faced 17 charges of theft of property and unlawful entry into people’s homes and were slapped with one year jail terms on each offence before the conditional suspension of other six years.

It is the State’s case that between July 2013 to March this year, the pair broke into various premises,  smashing windows, breaking padlocks, using hacksaws and breaking wooden doors forcing their way in, to steal property.

Various reports were made by complainants at Hillside and Donnington police stations. Detectives received information on the pair, which led to their arrest.

The two stole electrical gadgets, refrigerators, TV sets, laptops, radios, DVD players and clothes among other things in western suburbs and Kusile flats in Makokoba.

The pair volunteered to lead the police to all the places which they raided.

It is stated that Ngwenya and Mudenda broke into Mary Gomera’s house at Selbourne Park and stole a TV set, deep freezer, three piece radio, five set pots and 10kg mealie-meal.

They again raided Loreta Maria’ house at Riverside and got away with a double bed, 21 inch plasma TV, double door refrigerator, wall heater, wall mirrors, cupboard and a fan.

They then  went on to break into Zivanayi Mwedzi’s  premises in Burnside where they stole a plasma TV, home theatre, two cell phones, four plate gas stove, 5kg gas cylinder, blankets, radio and TV remote controls.

Between January and March, the two raided Elissan Bhulabhula’s house in Barham Green and stole a refrigerator, 21 inch CTV, DVD, woofer, three blankets, 10 packs of meat and 5kgs of flour.

They again returned to Selbourne Park were they raided Jakanani Dudzai’s house and got away with a plasma TV, DStv decoder, and 3kg of meat.

The duo returned to Barham Green where they burgled Sitheni Ncube’s house and stole a plasma TV, 200 litre-water container, car battery, four chairs and a table before they fled.

The property recovered was produced in court as evidence.
