Tsvangirai to address Africa Day rally

HARARE - Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has organised a special rally for Sunday at Zimbabwe Grounds to celebrate Africa Day and to drum up support for the main opposition party.

Luke Tamborinyoka, Tsvangirai’s spokesperson confirmed the development.

“The MDC president, a patriotic and popular leader of a post-liberation political behemoth, will address a star rally in Highfield where ordinary Zimbabweans as well as African and other envoys to Zimbabwe are cordially invited,” Tamborinyoka told the Daily News.

Every year Africa celebrates the founding of the Organisation of African Union (OAU), the predecessor the African Union (AU) founded by pan-Africanist in 1963.

While Tamborinyoka says the star rally will review the economic and political woes blighting the continent’s progress towards eradicating poverty, critics say the embattled MDC leader is out to assess his grip at the helm of the 15-year movement.

Last month former MDC secretary-general Tendai Biti and a host of leaders, walked out of the party, after accusing Tsvangirai of “remarkable failure of leadership”.

Tsvangirai, who enjoys considerable grassroots support compared to his erstwhile comrades, is seeking to turn the nation’s attention to the pressing economic woes, unemployment and general poverty.

“His Africa day address will centre on the challenges and acute deficits on the political, governance and economic front that most African States continue to face decades after successful liberation struggles,” Tamborinyoka said.

“President Tsvangirai’s address will also locate Zimbabwe in the context of Africa’s struggle for democracy, freedom, prosperity and the dignity of her citizens. African citizens remain shackled in the chains of poverty and oppression while the dignity and freedom of the African is still elusive, even after we were purportedly liberated.”

The former premier, who disputes results of last year’s controversial elections where he lost a third election challenge to veteran President Robert Mugabe and defied calls to stand down after this defeat, claims Africa is wallowing in poverty because of poor governance.

“Decades after independence, Africa continues to hold disputed elections while the continent’s citizens remain impoverished despite the abundant resources that are plundered by the new oppressors that took over the reins of governance after independence,” Tamborinyoka said.

This year’s Africa Day celebrations come on the backdrop of the sad abduction of more than 200 school girls by Islamist militants in Nigeria.

Yes why not.Who else has gone into gvt after challenging Mugabe? Why hate innocent MT ? We have hope in him NOT these malcontents masquerading as leadership renewal democrats. They can go to hell.

GURUKUSHWA - 21 May 2014

We are a very unfortunate lot . We lost all the good leaders through manslaughter and this started during the war of liberation. Now we are left with vampires, looters , masqueraders, traitors , looters etc etc along these lines.

Given the fact that Tsvangirai seems not to have really been shaken by the recent attacks and splits which angers ZANU PF a lot, I would not be surprised if this meeting is banned at the last minute due to shortage of police manpower or the venue having been double booked.

Dr Know - 21 May 2014

If he had done this during the GNU he would have won last election.

Zimbabwe is good at eliminating the good, remaining with chaff. Look at the guys eliminated from the map just before and after independence, and along the way. Now their target is MT. He is our only hope to our future. They know, come 2018 elections, he will sweep into power. So they want to deal with him way before. Biti will have to explain when history request for explanation. You were going to bea super hero, taking oover from MT naturally. I even foresaw MT being magnanimous by leaving power after only one term. Serious!!!!

Lets pray because cio are working all round the clock to disrupt this rally which they will then say mdc supporters clashed to justify their failed project .But what we all know for sure is that no shops will be closed or passersby forced in into the grounds . May god protect this rally from the evil spirit

Its the politics, stupid. Why does Tsvangirai keep on holding these rallies in urban areas. This is the time to conscientise the rural folks. At this rate Zanu ptuuu inotonga kusvika madhongi amera nyanga. MDC lacks great thinkers and innovators

Sure MT would be lucky if his rally will not be banned or disrupted on pretext. However, let's look at this scenario: --Ndabaningi broke away from ZAPU to form ZANU before Chikerema also broke away from ZAPU to form FROLIZI which got nowhere. RGM broke away from Ndabaningi&formed ZANU-PF to destroy Zimbabwe since 1980. Not to be outdone,Tekere broke away from RGM to form ZUM before Dongo's ZUD which together with the late Makamure is now history. Ncube fought MT to invite Mutambara who he in turn dethroned to later join hands with Dabengwa. Today,Biti breaks away from MT to form a 'GRAND COALITION'with Ncube,Dadengwa,Madhuku etc,all permanent failures. Maybe Madhuku'll lead the pathetic 'GRAND COALITION'with Sekai Holland as the vp--But there is also Priscilla in Ncube's formation.. Now after losing 3 elections,Biti'll take over, then Mangoma,Mafume, S Nkomo etc,etc to show 'DEMOCRACY.' Ohhh , the circus goes on &on forever!!!!
