Mutasa eyes DeMbare scalp again

HARARE - FC Platinum coach Lloyd Mutasa is on the hunt for a win when the miners take on Dynamos in a Castle Premiership match at the National Sports Stadium this afternoon, a result which will see him extend his unbeaten run against the Glamour Boys as a coach.

Mutasa’s ambitious Zvishavane-based side has had an inconsistent start to the 2014 season, picking up only two wins and three draws with the other two matches ending in defeat.

That incoherent start has seen the platinum miners drop to 11th place on the log standings with nine points from seven games.

Mutasa’s hopes are however raised for today’s assignment against a DeMbare side also enduring a stuttering start to the season.

“I think we are now coming up as a team,” Mutasa, who distinguished himself as a player at Dynamos, told the Daily News yesterday. “Our inconsistent results at the start of the season were a result of the fact that we had a lot of players out injured.

“Now those players are coming back into the team and I’m sure the results will start to improve from now on.

“Our away form has also been encouraging this season and the only blemish is that 1-0 defeat we suffered at the hands of Buffaloes in our last league game.”

History favours Mutasa, who has quite an impressive record against his former team, dating back to 2002 when he was in charge of Sporting Lions as player-coach.

As a coach, Mutasa has never lost against Dynamos.

Mutasa was the first FC Platinum coach to win against the Dynamos when the platinum miners beat the Harare giants 2-0 in a league match last year.

Last month, Platinum beat Dynamos 3-0 on penalties in the final of the Independence Trophy at today’s venue.

At the weekend, Platinum picked up a morale boosting 3-2 away win over Highlanders in the semi-final of the Zimbabwe National Army Charities match, while DeMbare suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of rivals CAPS United in the same competition.

“Obviously, as a coach, you always want to do well in every match you play and there is no exception for tomorrow’s match,” said Mutasa in reference to his unbeaten run against DeMbare.

“We are just hoping that the better team on the day will collect the three points. We have prepared well for this match and just hope that the players will implement everything we were working on in training.”

Dynamos come into this game aware that another defeat will dent their title defence chances, which appear to be already faltering in these early stages.

"We are definitely worried about the team’s recent poor performance. We need to go back to the drawing board and start working on our mistakes,” said Dynamos team manager Richard Chihoro after the defeat to Makepekepe at the weekend.

“Our next game is against FC Platinum and it’s a must win for us.”
