Team Zim to travel in batches

HARARE - Zimbabwe's Africa Youth Games team will travel in two batches for the second edition of the youth continental showpiece in an effort to minimise the time athletes will spend away from school.

The Africa Youth Games begin in Gaborone tomorrow and run until May 31, with the landlocked Southern Africa nation expected to welcome 2 500 junior athletes and officials from 54 African countries.

Zimbabwe will be represented by 59 athletes and 24 officials with athletes competing in 11 of the 21 sporting disciplines that will be on offer.

The first batch of Team Zimbabwe will leave today whilst another is set to follow during the course of the week, the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (Zoc) revealed yesterday.

“The bulk of the athletes are school going and while this is an opportunity for competitive experience, games exposure and Youth Games qualification, Zoc has taken on board concerns voiced regarding the time the young athletes may be away from school.

“To this end, while the bulk of the team will travel on May 20, some of the disciplines are making their own arrangements so as to minimise the time athletes will spend away from the critical second school term.”

Zimbabwe will be represented by 13 athletes in the track and field, eight in aquatics, six in basketball and two in rowing.

Also making the team are 13 rugby players, one golfer as well as two tennis players.

Fourteen netballers and one judoka will also get a prized ticket to Botswana hoping to leave their mark during the Games in which top young athletes from 53 other African countries will battle for honours.

Team Zimbabwe will be hoping to a better performance having won up two gold medals in the 100 and 20metres at the inaugural Youth Games in Rabat, Morocco, in 2010.

The Africa Youth Games will also serve as qualifiers for the Nanjing Youth Olympics in China later this year.
