Morris Queens hammer Maningi

HARARE - Table-topping Morris Depot Queens maintained their blistering start to the Northern Region Women Soccer League season after walloping shapeless Maningi Ladies 9-0 in the drawcard of a triple-header staged at the police grounds on Saturday.

League lead scorer Fortunate Kandawariwa sank a brace for the hosts while her sister, Florence, walked home with the match ball after pumping in a hat-trick. Mary Tshuma and Tanyaradzwa Bandamawe were also on target with a double apiece.

Three matches were on schedule in the only active women soccer league in the country at the moment, and impressive Weerams Queens dropped points for the first time in their third match of the season after a gallant show by schoolgirl outfit Herentals restricted the second-placed side to a 2-all draw.

The Weerams/Herentals four-goal thriller was preceded by Black Mambas Queens' 3-0 walkover at the expense of Millennium Queens, who failed to turn up for the breakfast kick-off after encountering transport problems.

Following their enchanting display Weerams Queens secured season's sponsorship from Belvedere Medical Centre whose proprietor Simbarashe Makuni was among the spectators yesterday.

But Morris Depot Queens were the toast of the day with their annihilation of Maningi that confirmed the police recruits as serious title-contenders after another 7-2 destruction of Mvurwi in Week Two during which Fortunate Kandawarira was again the heroine with a league record four goals.

Zimbabwe Women Soccer League (Northern Region) chairman Wilbert Rambanapasi said they had resolved to continue their idea of triple-headers because of their crowd-pulling effect and also in order to reduce the operating costs of clubs.
