MDC meeting aborted

HARARE - A meeting called to discuss problems in the opposition MDC had to be aborted after youths took umbrage at the unrestrained attack on Morgan Tsvangirai by  renewal team spokesperson Jacob Mafume.

Mafume was a panellist together with MDC spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora and deputy president of the smaller MDC Edwin Mushoriwa.

The highly-charged public seminar was held under the theme “Wither the MDC”. It was organised by policy think-tank, the Mass Public Opinion Institute at a local hotel in Harare.

Shooting from the hip, Mafume tore into Tsvangirai, describing him as a failed leader who concentrated on bed-hopping instead of pushing for political reforms.

This irked Tsvangirai’s supporters who started heckling Mafume, forcing the meeting to be called off.

“You cannot say you are fighting a big man mentality and then create another big man where others are donkeys that are being ridden,” Mafume said in his scathing presentation.

“We started a party of democrats, no one was riding others.

“We are actually trying to get rid of Mugabe who is riding us like donkeys. If our people are trying to create another leader (Tsvangirai) who makes us all donkeys that have to be ridden by him as he gets into Jerusalem, I say no to this,” said Mafume, amid heckling from the floor.

Youths loyal to Tsvangirai loudly disrupted his presentation, shouting that Mafume was a traitor.

Others shouted that Tsvangirai appointed Mafume into the prime minister’s office and the MDC renewal spokesperson was repaying the favour by betraying the former union leader.

“Sit down, we don’t want to hear any of your nonsense,” one Tsvangirai supporter shouted.

However, Mafume would have none of it, and continued attacking Tsvangirai saying he was a pseudo-democrat.

“All of us, remember that all issues were to be discussed at principal level.

“Who was the principal who got $1,5 million (to build a mansion) when everybody else had boycotted government?

“Who is the principal who got more wives than others,” said an unfazed Mafume, provoking the MDC supporters to rise from their seats and demand that he sits down.

Others started trooping out of the room, while the heckling continued.

The chaos continued for about 10 minutes and the meeting was called off.

Prior to the chaos, Mwonzora described expelled MDC secretary-general Tendai Biti and deputy treasurer-general Elton Mangoma, as traitors who betrayed Tsvangirai.

Mwonzora said Tsvangirai assigned the two with important tasks to negotiate with Zanu PF to consummate the government of national unity but said they  failed to deliver. Mwonzora said the two should take responsibility for the lethargy in political reforms not place the blame on the MDC leader alone.

“We now have a rebellion in the MDC and who is leading the rebellion?” Mwonzora asked. “It is the people that were chosen as negotiators, people who were chosen as key ministers, the key negotiators in the management committee of Copac and Jomic,” Mwonzora said.

“If the GPA was a bad agreement, how can the same people escape blame?” Mwonzora said. “If the performance of the MDC in government was not good for example, the failure to pay civil servants salaries, how can these escape blame? In the crafting of the manifesto, the secretary-general was a key player and if the manifesto was bad, how can the SG escape blame? If we didn’t have a good message in the election, how can the SG not take blame?”

Before being heckled, Mafume had said Tsvangirai had betrayed the democratic struggle as he was now among the big men who built houses bigger than schools.

“You have people who built houses bigger than schools and hospitals,” Mafume said. “You have one person wanting to live in a house with 30 rooms. You now have a person with a house with more toilets than the constituency that I campaigned in. You have a toilet in the first floor, a toilet in the bath room, a toilet in the bedroom and a toilet at the gate.”

It seems this Jacob Mafume and his renewal team are pseudo democrats. If they thought they were popular, why did they not wait for the Congress, get elected into leadership positions then lead the party in implement their new ideas to move the party foward? The fact that they could not wait for Congress may indicate that they new they were unpopular. It would do them a lot of good if they can hold public rallies and people can gauge how much support they have.Meanwhile let them enjoy donor funds while they last.

The more one listens to the two factional leaders and their acolytes the more it becomes clear why the MDC to implement the reforms - none side knows what is important and what is not.

Wilbert Mukori - 16 May 2014

It makes for good comedy. I have long doubted Mwonzora's abilities, having watched him vying for SRC positions at UZ, then with ZUM and now recklessly attempting to wrestle power at the MDC-T. No serious person would listen to a supposed "spokesperson" of a national party talking about "running around the National Sports Stadium in 63 seconds" as one of his "proud" accomplishments. Seriously. And if Tsvangirai expects this gentleman to contest with other party spokespersons such as Mufume, Jonathan Moyo, Charamba and Nhlanhla Dube....all of these men very articulate and focused, then good luck to the Tsvangirai team. I would have hoped that Mwonzora would have stuck to a higher ground and focused on the importance of an electoral process to remove leaders. Since he chose the low road, he might as well answer the following "under the hip" punches from Mufume: “Who is the principal who got more wives than others,” “Who was the principal who got $1,5 million (to build a mansion) when everybody else had boycotted government? “You have people who built houses bigger than schools and hospitals,” “You have one person wanting to live in a house with 30 rooms" You now have a person with a house with more toilets than the constituency that I campaigned in. You have a toilet in the first floor, a toilet in the bath room, a toilet in the bedroom and a toilet at the gate.”

Yap, it is now an inconsequential fiddler-crab muddy fight alright. The more one listens to the two factional leaders and their acolytes the more it becomes clear why the MDC to implement the reforms - none of them know what is important and what is not.

Jacob Mafume show us your political cv so that we know what you the "hero" has accomplished in your lifetime. If you think you have what it takes to lead masses of Zimbabwe into the promised land beyond the tyranny of Mugabe and the "undemocratic" Tsvangirai, why don't you just form a new political party with a completely new name to demonstrate your political manhood? If history is something to go by, Jacob Mafume you were a nothing in the mainstream MDC.I don't remember even seeing your name on a mere rural district council councillors list let alone MPS. My brother you don't demonstrate greatness by denigrating the great. Neither can you feign wisdom and intelligence by parading sycophancy. It is clear that you are merely grabbing this opportunity to attempt a rise to fame which I doubt if you could achieve by the modus operandi you have adopted.Tsvangirai is an aside of the main issue which is Mugabe.Being power hungry takes you nowhere because you are aiming your arrows at the wrong candidate. So are you saying you are condemning Tsvangirai and company cz they have houses with 30 rooms and 100 toilets thereby making you jealous and wanting to accrue same?So if find out that Biti has more wives in secret and mansions you are going to dump him again?Iam told you are a lawyer ,did you study your law in Portuguese?

MHONDI DZOPONDANA - 16 May 2014

who is more violent, tsvangirai's youth or mugabe's youth. disrupting such an important meeting?

wind - 16 May 2014

WELL THE PURPOSE OF THIS MEETING WAS ALSO DUBIOUS AND ANTI-DEVELOPMENTAL. I THINK THATS WHY IT WAS DISRUPTED. ITS LIKE GETTING DIVORCED PEOPLE TO TALK ABOUT WHY THEY DIVORCED, THEN WHAT? IS N'T THIS MAJORING ON MINORS AND MINORING ON MAJORS. THE PARTIES SHOULD TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE OFFERING THE ORDINARY ZIMBABWEAN RATHER THAN DEBATING THEIR STANDOFFS AND TRADING ACCUSATIONS.

I doubt Jacob Mafume's intellect , he contradicts himself, at one point "he said Tsvangirai got 1.5 million as his pension to by a house after working for 5 years in the Government, yet his father got 20 thousand dollars after donkey years of service. A confirmation of Mr Tsvangirai is entitled for his pension and what he did was above the board. He queried about his father getting less, it is as good as a garden boy asking his boss to get the same share as his. Now for him to ask Tsvangirai why he built a bigger house with toilets it bungles the mind, only an insane person can do that. Anyway he confirmed that he still goes to bush to relieve himself in this twentieth century, so you can`t fault him. All his contribution was shallow and pathetic.

The move by TB to pre-empt the party's congress by 'suspending' the party leader is evident enough that TB had seen that his political fortunes in this party had dwindled to the lowest erb, considering what he had done in failing the party to attain power. You cannot expect him to bounce back into the party. Haana kunatsa kwaakabva, so anototi afarire usiku huri mberi, and praise it so much that everyone would think kuti zvaakaita zvakanaka. Chakashata chakashata,.........!!! Fight your war from within

Boterekwa - 16 May 2014

Ladies and gentlemen lets not waste time with people like Biti ,Mangoma, Mafume & company. These lunatics are trying to divert Zimbabweans from real problems facing us. We ought to be taking to task people like Dokora who has taken it upon himself to systematically destroy our children's future through his bizarre education policies. He has banned vacation and extra lessons, yet it is public knowledge that we have slow learners who need extra attention in order for them to pass, with teacher-pupil ratio of an average 40-60 in class you cannot expect a teacher to have individualised teaching in a lesson of 30-40 minutes. Way back in the late 80s when l wrote my Grade 7 exams we had vacation school even at O' Level. So l don't know what on earth this Dokora guy is trying to achieve. He is said to be planning to introduce the bottle-necking system we fought against during colonialism, it said that a student who fails at O'Level will only be allowed to re-sit for the exam after 3 years. What with our NATIONAL PASS RATE @ O'Level fluctuating between 18%-21% perennially. So he wants to create a mass of uneducated youths on the streets, how much damage will this lot do to our communities? how much will the government spend on the social mis-fits he intends to breed. ZANU PF also has to watch out for this guy's motive unless they are accomplices. This issue calls for public debate whether you are ZANU, MDC- G,T.N,V,....,ZAPU, MAVAMBO, it is our children,s future that is at stake and they will be a burden to the society long after the Dokoras have gone. PLEASE MR EDITOR CAN YOU OPEN A SERIOUS DISCUSSION ON THIS MATTER.

Kufonya Vhudzijena, Mwana wevhu chaiye - 16 May 2014

Ladies and Gentlemen wish to differ with most commentators, first, people like Robert Mugabe were created by people like the above commentators. People turn to hero worship individuals than the constitution of the party. Again they call themselves democrats when they are not. 1st the constitution stated that a leader should lead 10 years whether good like Bill Clinton or Obama, but that was changed to suit 1 person. 2ndly how many leaders of opposition have been changed in the UK election after election, yet Morgan still fail every election and nothing happens to him. Above it is you the people who have made Morgan indispensible by naming the party after him as if its his private property. Even a dictator like Mugabe has never dreamt of naming ZANU-Mugabe. So by failing to follow simple democratic systems you are creating another Mugabe, who now has a militia army to beat or kill for him. Oh! cry the beloved country

Dalu - 17 May 2014

Jacob Mafume is frustrated at his own failures in life. Tsvangirayi's house is not the biggest in the country. It's even smaller than mine. He should drive through Borrowdale. If the hype is about Tsvangirayi's house Hapana nyaya. Jacob should excel in his profession and build his own mansion like Arnold Makoni, Alec Muchadehama and the generality of successful professionals. The MDC agenda is beyond trivial accommodation and social issues.

Chiremba - 17 May 2014

This Mafume guy loses every opportunity he gets to articulate his team's ideas and strategies to remove Mugabe and make lives better for the pple by concentrating on Tsvangirai. If it is a case of women then even his current leader Biti has that problem too, By the way how did that allegation of Biti and a lady in the Finance Ministry who were flirting together wih Biti said to have been giving her favours for foreign trips at a special daily allowance rate go? Even Mafume has that problem too only that he has never been an imprtant person thus why nobody was bothering about his life. Let's wait and see what happens now that he is in the limelight. All Tsvangirai did regarding his women was milked dry by the state media a long time ago after which he got more than a million votes in the last election so Mafume should not think he is telling pple something new. Rather he should start using such rare opportunities to market and advance his new party's so-called new ideas. Castigating Tsvangirai's person does not reward him and his team in anyway, instead it backfires and subtracts from the few thympasysers his team has got

Rotomokai Zvenyu - 17 May 2014

zvinennharo izvi, regai tivone. iye tsvangirayi wakatanga ne 1 million people here? the support grew from a few to many. the same can happen to this Biti-Mapfume, mangoma project. they can grow to become the country's biggest OPPOSITION party. but during the transition it simply means zanu pf will have unfettered access to the state house. Tsvangirai's life cycle is nearing an end and you cant expect any new ideas from him. for 15 years including 5 in gorvenment we now know his rhetoric, antics and his blame game. lets have new thinking new blood in the opposition. mukatangirwa nezanu pf kuva nenew blood , SORRY KATATU. the earlier the better. tsvangirayi kubuhera zvemamansion izvi ngaachisiira vana ndiko tizive kuti muparidzi anorarama shoko raanoparidza. so far hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm lets see but we are in for a major showdown.

wegonah Chitovah - 18 May 2014

U Tsvangi cannot be a leader coz u failed to unite very few pple like Biti, Ncube etc. You know the President knew that he could not unite the whole country without JMN and u can't without Ncube. If u are sure that his loss of votes indicates that he is nothing why do u talk about him in every rally. If u happen 2 get into power donors will surely give u money but with a sure condition "Gay rights". Can u tell them that its the act of dogs & pigs. If u can't say that then you are fired. We can't give u the keys 2 statehouse coz u are not the brand we want. We rather be hungry than be cursed by the Almighty God. Amen.

People should just admit kuti Save has done all he can to lead us to the promised land. I have nothing but admiration for the man and what he has achieved in reining in ZPf in order to keep Zimbabwe running until now. What is needed now is for him to step aside ombopawo chimuti kune mumwe. I remember those days Save saying the same thing about Mugabe, the relay analogy. Please Save practice what you preach. Step aside and let the people choose new blood timboona kuti tinosvikepi. You could still remain the party patron, seeing as the party has your name, and remain relevant in the political arena. Do you think that we can win the elections with you at the helm? At this rate ZPf will renew their leadership before us. I am not saying that Biti and Co are right but the way they are being denigrated will scare anyone who tries to challenge the leadership. Cry my beloved country.

Ini - 18 May 2014

Please we can't experiment with leadership in this long struggle. Are we going to accept another split in Biti&company's new party? How many more splinter groups are we going to tolerate? How can we expect MT to unite pple who fight against him? If this is his weakness then he is great. We don't need numerous opposition parties to remove Mugabe's failed gvt .MDC-T is good enough although it is faced with rebels. This will pass at some stage.

The children who were born when Tsvangirai became president are going to be voting in the election Tsvangirai is crying to contest. This is not good for democracy. Tsvangirai has removed democracy from his party in order to remove Mugabe from presidency. Democracy has become Tsvangirai to some people and Tsvangirai has become democracy. The are striking similarities between Tsvangirai and Mugabe. Since independence Mugabe has ruled this country and since the inception of MDC Tsvangirai has been ruling MDC. Constitutions were changed to accommodate the two's hunger for power . Mugabe kills democracy for Tsvangirai not to be in power. Tsvangirai kills democracy so he can remove Mugabe. All claim to have grass root support and none thinks the other has more. Its now all about their ego than it is about the people. They both don't think anyone else can do what they did. My question is if Tsvangirai dies today will the MDC die with him. If so then its not worth investing in such an organisation which is at the mercy of an individual. if Mugabe dies today will Zimbabwe not have a leader. What differs now between MDC and ZANU PF is only their time of existence. The two leaders want to rule this country at any cost. Zimbabweans will cry again as the cycle of being liberated continues. "It takes another liberator to liberate people from their liberator". It seem Tsvangirai' s role model is Bob.
