Mangoma 'attackers' freed

HARARE - A Harare magistrate has released two MDC activists accused of assaulting suspended deputy treasurer-general Elton Mangoma after the State failed to provide a trial date.

Harare magistrate Vakayi Chikwekwe ordered the release of Samson Tumai Nerwande and Paul Gorekore from remand before ordering the State to put its house in order.

“There has not been progress to the State’s case since February. The State will have to proceed by way of summons,” Magistrate Chikwekwe said.

Prosecutor Sharon Mashavira had applied for further remand to next week before accused persons could be furnished with a trial date.

Chikwekwe objected to the application, saying the accused persons’ lawyer had given notice for refusal of further remand on their last court appearance.

Nerwande and Gorekore were jointly charged with Denford Ngadziore, Francis Mafimbidzofa, Enock Mukudu, Stefani Tafadzwa Jahwi and James Chidhakwa.

Accused persons alleged that Mangoma fingered them in order  to settle political scores.

They claim that police officers falsely implicated them in the offence before conducting thorough investigations.

Mashavira alleged that on February 15, Ngadziore, Gorekore, Mafimbidzofa, Mukudu, Jahwi, Nerwande, Chidhakwa and others who are still at large reportedly waylaid Mangoma outside Harvest House and beat him up. He was saved after rushing into MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai’s vehicle.

They allegedly assaulted Mangoma with open hands and clenched fists.

Mangoma’s spectacles valued at $300 were damaged in the attack.

The State accused the persons of tearing Mangoma’s shirt before he was whisked away in Tsvangirai’s vehicle.

We told you so, this was nothing but a CIO led operation. Even the fire cracker that exploded at Biti's house resulting in an army of police going to investigate is dubious attempt to destroy Morgan. Why dont Biti and Mangoma show us how much support they command by calling for rallies like Tsvangirai is doing?

Mangoma had a torn shirt after he provoked MDC-T youths just like those MDC-T supporters who are said to have provoked ZanuPf youths by buying cigarettes at a tuckshop wearing MDC regalia kikikiki.
