MDC beefs up security at provincial office

BULAWAYO - The mainstream MDC Bulawayo provincial executive has beefed up security at its provincial offices as the property and assets wrangle between the two feuding factions escalates.

This comes after officials sympathetic to the MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai last week force-opened the MDC Mutare provincial offices and seized a vehicle and other property.

Ever since the national council meeting by the Tendai Biti-led renegades, there has been an escalation of tension between the two warring MDC factions.

The Daily News observed that at least six youths are now based at the provincial offices on a 24-hour alert.

Abednico Bhebhe, the party’s deputy national organising secretary, confirmed the beefing up of security but scoffed at the assets wrangle.

“The youths can do that whenever there is something,” Bhebhe said.

“They are always there in solidarity with the party. Those youths are just there to make sure there is enough security because last time people came during the night and painted the walls with graffiti. So they just want to make sure the place is safe from funny invasions.”

He said they had enlisted the services of the youths on a 24-hour guard.

“The renewal team has got no capacity to take the properties unless they go and hire people from Zanu PF,” Bhebhe said.

“They don’t have that capacity because they don’t have any following at all.

“We have also realised that Zanu PF is behind these guys and we are aware that Zanu PF is ready to mobilise and has got the capacity to do that. We are trying to protect our territory not against the renewal guys but against Zanu PF.”

He also confirmed that some vehicles in Matabeleland North and South have already been secretly stored away as part of the raging war between the two factions.

“As I am speaking, they have hidden the cars and we are looking for them,” he said.

“One of the brand new Isuzu in Mat North is hidden while one is in Hwange but in any case it does not assist them because they cannot use them. As long as we cannot use them, they can’t use them.”

Renewal team spokesperson Jacob Mafume told the Daily News that the Tsvangirai-led party should deal with politics and leave property alone.

“The suspension of Morgan Tsvangirai does not affect the properties. If he is brought back, he will find the properties there,” Mafume said.

“It is not like where you are going your property goes. Like when Cuthbert Dube left Psmas, did he go with the property?

“So this is what we have been saying about the personification of the party.”
