Picci, Matsiwe win Arenel Wimbledon

HARARE - Rising stars Luca Picci and Beverly Matsiwe are the champions of this year’s Arenel Wimbledon Harare Junior Tennis Open tournament in the Under-18 boys and girls respectively.

Top seed Picci posted a convincing straight-sets win against Michael Gutu 6-3, 6-3 to win the title in the Under 16/18 boys category.

In the semifinals, Picci won a titanic battle against Keith Wakatama 7-6 (4), 7-6(0) to book his place in the finals.

Matsiwe outclassed Tariro Dembo 6-4, 6-4 to win the title in the Under-18 girl’s category.

In the semi-finals, Matsiwe upset top seed Rufaro Chirewa 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to proceed to the finals.

In the Under-14 boys category Valentine Munyawiri was crowned the champion after he struggled to overcome Brett Hournsell 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(5).

Nandi Munyulwa won the title in the Under-14 girls category after beating Annette Matumba 6-3, 6-2.

In the Under-12 boys category Ethan Sibanda won the title after beating Andrew Chuigaazira while Vimbayi Moyo beat Vimbai Nengu to win Under 12 girls title.

Kudzai Simbaneuta won the Under-10 boys red category after beating Chikomborero Wenga 11-7, 11-7 while Yvone Nyarungu beat Judith Machokoto 9-11, 11-6, 11-5 to win the girls Under-10 red sections.

Ray Mhangwa, the Arenel divisional director said they will continue to support junior tennis and was happy with the talent on show.
