Dance group embarks on maiden SA tour

HARARE - Chitungwiza-based Ol Unique Dance Factory is off to Johannesburg, where they will share the stage with  a South African dance group, Young Culture, in the first week of May.

OL Unique, which featured on Flem B’s video for the song Ndichamutambira — the ZBC Video of the Year for 2012 — believe their spectacular performances on the Zimbabwean dance scene have earned them the well-deserved maiden tour of South Africa.

Stewart Mupaya, the dance group’s leader, is hopeful that the pending tour will catapult them into the limelight both in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

“Our journey to South Africa is going to prove that we are a quality dance group that thrives on stunning choreography,” said Mupaya.

“As our name suggests, our dances are unique and creative. They are fast, well-polished and very spectacular.”

Mupaya, who is a student at the Chinhoyi University of Technology, told the Daily News that his group’s fortunes changed for the better after featuring on Flem B’s award-winning video for the song Ndichamutambira.

“And because our dances blended well with Flem B’s excellent vocals, the song was voted the best ZTV video for 2012. We later featured on Flem B’s 2013 song called Kana Church Yanakidza So that also attracted a lot of publicity,” said the young dancer.

The group’s ability to dance sungura, kwaito and RnB have made it possible for them to be invited to take part in various video shoots of some of Zimbabwe’s leading musicians.

“We have worked with several artistes such as Olinda Marowa, Bethen Pasinawako-Ngolomi and Thembalami among others.

Mupaya also revealed that the six-member group made up of Chitungwiza youngsters could tour Ghana, Botswana, Australia and the United Kingdom if they get the requisite funding.
