It's null and void: MDC Byo

BULAWAYO - The mainstream MDC Bulawayo provincial executive has come out guns blazing dismissing the supposed suspension of its president Morgan Tsvangirai (pictured) and the party’s top hierarchy on Saturday by rebels calling for leadership renewal as a non-event.

Senior MDC leaders such as vice-president Thokozani Khupe, national chairman Lovemore Moyo, organising secretary Nelson Chamisa and spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora were suspended during the meeting, in a move that has  officially marked another split in the party.

“What transpired in Harare according to us the people of Bulawayo, is null and void,” Dorcas Sibanda, the acting Bulawayo party provincial chairperson told journalists during a press briefing yesterday.

Provincial secretary Regie Moyo and suspended provincial youth assembly chairman Themba Nyathi were the only two from Bulawayo who attended the disputed national council meeting.

“We are not going to recognise the decision which was made there simply because Bulawayo was not represented. Those who constitute the council from this city were not there. And for your own information, when the national council sits, it is the president and the national chairman who call for it (meeting),” Sibanda said.

She said Nyathi had no authority to represent Bulawayo since he is on suspension while Moyo did not consult other provincial members, automatically making their attendance null and void.

Sibanda described the second largest city as the party’s headquarters judging by the last elections where the MDC swept all Bulawayo parliamentary seats.

“As Bulawayo, the stronghold of the party, we want to state categorically that we are fully behind Tsvangirai and Khupe, until the national congress decides,” she said.

Sibanda, who took over the chairmanship’s post after the incumbent Gorden Moyo took a questionable sabbatical, which was described as political leave, said the province was not going to be derailed by petty issues which are clearly being orchestrated from the dark by Zanu PF.

“We are not going to lose focus. This is a Zanu PF cooked pot, Zanu PF has realised that they have failed to deliver. They failed to deliver in their 100 days target now they want to use MDC as the scapegoat and divert attention on  their failures,” the Bulawayo Central legislator said.

Speaking at the same event,  Bulawayo East legislator Thabitha Khumalo described the renewal team as persons suffering from meningitis.

“We are not here discussing individuals who are suffering from meningitis and as MDC Bulawayo province, we are not doctors, we are cadres that are fighting to free Zimbabwean people from slavery,” Khumalo said.

She said as a party,  they were not going to spend their time fighting each other at the expense of the struggle to remove Zanu PF from power.

“When we formed this party in 1999, our goal was to remove the dictator which is Zanu PF.

“As MDC Bulawayo, we have no time to worry about people who forget to jump off at a bus stop there were supposed to.

“We are not here to fight each other, but to take the Zimbabwean family to Canaan. If the kitchen is too hot get out,” Khumalo said.

What has Zanu PF got to do with this mess? The problem is that you always find a scapegoat for all your problems! Youhave failed to handle the issue of leadership renewal! Period!

This renewal project is already dead in the water before it has started. Kkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!

The big tent is collapsing. Its too smelly inside. Those who cannot stand the stench smell are now cleansing the tent. It is their political responsibility. Well done Biti and Mangoma. It was long time coming. Prof Ncube told you so.

Mavuso - 28 April 2014

I think Tendi Biti is biting his lips and his nails saying' hey but what have I done'. That was silly of him to do that.

Maita Manyuka - 28 April 2014

The Sibandas and company should be wary of who they support at this juncture. Sipepa Nkomo chaired the meeting and he is respected in Matabeland more than these individuals. Mama Sekai Holland was there too. So to say Bulawayo does not recognise the suspension of Tsvangirai is not wise. As a child of Matabeleland , we hate violence and all those who associate themselves with violence. Violence reminds us of gukurahundi. We recall that some people from Matabeleland , associated with gukurahundi and we may start drawing parallels.

Rest in peace Mr Biti. bad decision

Larry - 28 April 2014

I dont know what Tendai Biti is thinking by dis-enganging himself with his leadership. This is political suicide. It s not going to help him going where others are coming from. Waste of time really.

Larry - 28 April 2014

Another error of judgement by Biti. Politics is bottom up and never up bottom. This simply means one is at the top because the bottom is supported by the masses. Never will you be able to float without the masses lifting you high. Not sure who lied to Biti that he has the support. You may have been promised millions but you cant buy the people.

Ziziharinanyanga - 28 April 2014

Sorry Biti Thank you for what you have contributed so far and we wish you success in your new party , But note that the struggle will now move on without you. We will get there and unfortunately without you. REST IN PEACE dear solder. THe masses will move on with Morgan. RIP guys

RAYMOND - 28 April 2014

who is the true democrat now? those who are not patient enough for the elections or those that wait for the election day on the calendar?

fidza - 29 April 2014

Here lies the political remains of a man who thought as a technocrat he had it all and could lead an opposition party. Rest in peace Tendai Biti (and your misguided cronies).

Hidza - 29 April 2014

rip biti

jimmy - 29 April 2014

Tendai had it all-brains, charisma and potential but now that he has chosen to go his own separate way, it is very unfortunate and we wish him well.

Are people's memory this short or is it that they are unaware of the original MDC constitution. According to the founding constitution, the Leader of MDC can only serve two terms, whether elected or not elected to be the country's president. Tsvangirai has served more than two terms. Let us assume (which is impossible) Tsvangirai was elected President of Zimbabwe, the new Constitution says a President can only serve two terms, will the Constitution be changed so that Tsvangirai serves more than two terms as Zimbabwe's President to finish the people's project. Tsvangirai should not be the MDC president if the MDC constitution was not changed to accommodate his failing to win elections. Tsvangirai continuing as MDC President only benefits ZANU (PF), as ZANU (PF) will remain in power. It does matter how much people complain about stolen elections, a strategic leadership is needed to engage ZANU (PF) and the World. SADC, AU and the world are tired and bored of Tsvangirai crying foul. One just has to read what Lindiwe Zulu said about the failures during negotiations. We need a change
