Chombo offside

EDITOR — Recent media comments attributed to Ignatius Chombo that the Chitungwiza demolitions will be happening in 3 weeks’ time are unfortunate as they are illegal.

The Chitungwiza demolitions come in the wake of reports that many land barons had illegally parcelled out land to unsuspecting citizens.

It has been reported that government issued a 3-week ultimatum to Chitungwiza and Manyame Rural District Council residents to destroy their “illegally-constructed’’ houses.

The houses in question are those built on wetlands, above sewer pipes and under electricity pylons.

While it might appear a genuine move to sanitise the town, Heal Zimbabwe finds it appalling that the government wants to make the home-owners victims again.

These people were duped by land barons and made to buy land on areas that were not supposed to be built houses.

Minister Chombo cannot surely expect all these families to have demolished their own houses in a short space of 3 weeks or even 1 year.

The issue is not about the length of the notice but the cruelty of demanding residents to demolish their houses without an alternative plan.

Where does he expect them to go, has he considered the plight of children that are going to school?

Has he considered the fast-approaching winter season? Has he considered the amount of resources that have been invested in building such structures?

Has he considered the housing problems in Zimbabwe and Chitungwiza to be specific?

The government is currently grappling with victims at Chingwizi camp, those evicted in Mazowe and the Murambatsvina victims still homeless and here is a full Cabinet minister wanting to create another group of internally-displaced people.

The Constitution of the country is clear in that it gives every human being the right to shelter and the government should first provide decent accommodation to the affected before giving ultimatums.

Heal Zimbabwe calls upon all relevant stakeholders to come together and map a way forward that will see an amicable resolution of the standoff that will not result in another ill-planned Murambatsvina.
