MDC rebels rule out unity with Tsvangirai

HARARE - Elton Mangoma and a team of his loyalists yesterday ruled out any unity with MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai, highlighting intensified strategies to dethrone him.

Addressing journalists in Harare yesterday, suspended MDC deputy treasurer-general Elton Mangoma’s spokesperson Jacob Mafume, who was introduced as the “MDC renewal team spokesperson,” said the purported unity between the rebels and Tsvangirai was a farce.

“You cannot unite with yourself (Tsvangirai). You cannot say I am uniting when you don’t call the aggrieved party.”

“In that instance, when the so-called unity was announced, the person who was on suspension was the treasurer-general and at that point they mentioned that he remains on suspension and the issue he was suspended for was writing a letter to discuss about leadership issues.”

Two weeks ago, Tsvangirai said he had healed the rift between himself and rebels pushing for his ouster.

Mafume, who was flanked by MDC youth assembly secretary general Promise Mkwananzi, alleged Tsvangirai had personalised the democratic struggle and was acting as if he owned the MDC.

“When you are elected to a post, you are not given title deeds and that is where we have always complained,” Mafume said. “When you are elected to be a president of a country, you are not given title deeds, same as a political party. What happens is that you are given responsibility that you are supposed to carry out. When that responsibility is questioned, you don’t behave like someone is taking your personal property.”

Asked whether MDC secretary-general Tendai Biti is part of the renewal team, Mafume said the former finance minister has said the party needs to go back to the founding values.

However, he said Mangoma was fully behind the renewal team.

Surprising that Mangoma does not want to be suspended unconstitutionally yet he wants to dislodge Tsvangirayi unconstitutionally. I see a ZPF hand in it all.

It appears these guys are confused. Mangoma is refusing to be suspended while he is busy with his renewal team. Spare us time and resources and proceed with your project. The MDC-T project will proceed without them. We can say thank for for your contribution and we will take the baton and proceed with the struggle. Tsvangirai is our touch bearer and will contiue to lead the struggle. The promised land is near and we will get there . Those who are tired should remain by the way side. Viva 2018

All Mangoma needs is publicity in the wrong arena.

This renewal team keeps blubbering about returning to MDC's core values and promise of bring democratic change in Zimbabwe. What they have not said is why the MDC failed to do so throughout the five years of the GNU. People like Biti and Mangoma were the chief MDC negotiators of the GPA which listed the democratic reforms that were supposed to be implemented. And yet not even one reform was ever implemented. Even since the rigged elections Mugabe has kicked MDC leaders out of the gravy train and it is this reality that has forced these MDC politicians to reclaim the original agenda of democratic change in the hope the voters will not remember that they betrayed the nation last time over the same issue!

Mangoma acts opportunistically. Does he think that he can get a vote as a leader? The money that he was given by Zanu Pf to divided the party will never work. Tsvangirai is still very popular in Zimbabwe. He won the rigged elections, everybody knows that. People who slept like Mangoma like blame it all to Tsvangirai.

Mangoma wants to build a doomed ship that will sink when it reaches shallow waters.
