Huge turnout for Rotary tennis tourney

HARARE - The Rotary e-Club “Ambassador” junior tennis championship started Saturday at Harare Sports Club with more than 160 participants from across the country.

The event is being sponsored by four embassies namely Indonesia, China, Russia, and Vatican.

The tournament is expected to end on Monday and it caters for the Under 10 and Under 12 players.

Richmore Murape, the tournament director, said they are happy with the turnout and believes that the event will go a long way in as far as the development of the game is concerned.

“We have participants from across the country. We are happy with this turnout, the junior players need these kind of tournaments and they have to play to sharpen their skills at this stage,” Murape told the Daily News.

Murape says the tournament was mooted during the Claudio Murape Memorial tourney last year held in honour of his late brother, former tennis coach and first black non-playing captain of the Zimbabwe Davis Cup team.

Borislav Boynoff president of e-Club Ambassador said plans are underway to make it an annual event.

“We will continue to support the juniors and we are hoping that this will promote junior development in the country. This will be the future of professional tennis players so there is need to support them.

“Last year at Murape’s memorial tourney, I noticed that there is a lot of talent being left untapped in the country and the idea is to give an opportunity to the unprivileged juniors,” said Boynoff
