KuMabhebhi goes dancehall

HARARE - Zimbabwean dancehall’s best female artiste Lady Squanda will share the stage with Bounty Lisa and Sister Flame during the monthly KuMabhebhi Concert to be held at the Book Café tomorrow.

KuMabhebhi, a monthly gig initiated by Cindy Munyavi and Clare Nyakujara to showcase female artistes, has until now revolved around Afro-fusion, R‘n’ B and urban grooves.

Nyakujara is excited to be presenting the hottest female dancehall stars in Zimbabwe in a show that will also feature guest male hunk Tally B and drummer Wishie.

“We have chosen dancehall because let us face it; it is the in thing,” she said.

“Dancehall is what people are talking about and it is really entertaining. We want these dancehall ladies to sing on their own without curtain raising for their male counterparts.”

Munyavi believes the KuMabhebhi Concerts cannot afford to ignore the raging dancehall craze that has taken Zimbabwe by storm.

“This is a night for dancehall lovers and curious people alike to witness what happens in dancehall circles. We are now engaging more genres and soon it will be gospel,” she said.

“KuMabhebhi is not in any way derogatory. It is the way women are addressed, and even a grown woman likes being called babe. Ask any woman how she feels when her partner/husband/boyfriend calls her babe. So it is all about women and any woman artiste can come and perform. It is all about elevating each other as women.”

The KuMabhebhi Concert organisers have decided to hold most of the shows at the Book Café.

“We prefer the Book Café because their set -up is conducive for us since they have everything under one roof. You will be seeing more of KuMabhebhi shows at the venue,” said Nyakujara.

“You will also see less of us (me and Cindy). This is so because we want to feature other ladies.

At some shows we will just sit back and let the other ladies do their thing.

KuMabhebhi is a platform for women and every woman from all the music genres.”
