MDC on smear campaign against me — Mangoma

HARARE - Elton Mangoma, the suspended MDC deputy treasurer-general, has dismissed charges that he embezzled party funds to launch his presidential bid as a smear campaign.

Mangoma was suspended by the MDC for allegedly contravening the party’s code of conduct and bringing the 15-year-old movement into disrepute.

He stands accused of using party funds to influence and bribe party structures to ascend to the presidency as well as organising and participating in factional activities.

In a charge sheet compiled by party chairperson Lovemore Moyo, Mangoma stands accused of bringing the party into disrepute after he conducted media interviews in connection with a letter he wrote to Morgan Tsvangirai asking him to step down as party president.

But now Mangoma has come out guns blazing, saying the charges were nothing more than a smear campaign aimed at preventing him from campaigning for the MDC presidency.

In a telephone interview with the Daily News yesterday, Mangoma said he was baffled at how his party took so long to present the charges.

“It took them two weeks to present the charges and the communique that they initially brought out was different from the charge sheet,” Mangoma said. “ I only got these charges on Sunday.”

The former Energy minister also dismissed charges that he embezzled party funds to bribe and influence party structures.

“It’s a smear campaign, they are fishing in the dark, the finances they are talking about had been explained and accepted by them,” Mangoma said.

“They are trying to block me from campaigning, that is why they are now talking of me not seeing members of the party during my suspension.

“Since when has a senior member of the party sought the permission of another senior member to see party members?

“We are the leadership and that is what we are supposed to do. How can senior leadership be prevented from seeing people? Politics is about people.”

He pointed out that he had every right to meet MDC supporters to canvass for support because he was only suspended from the party and not expelled.

“I have always seen people and I will continue to see people,” he told the Daily News.

“I have been suspended and not expelled. I am not in solitary confinement. They should tell the people not to see me if they are really in control of the people.”

Jacob Mafume, Mangoma’s lawyer, said he would challenge the charges in court, citing MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai, secretary-general Tendai Biti, Moyo and the party as respondents.

You are finished and klarr. see you at MDC-N soon, if you are lucky to be accepted (and they are not mindful of your inflitration skills), better still just go to your real home, ZANU PF.

So Mangoma has no idea of what it means to be suspended? He wants a charge sheet to look exactly the same as a memo? He wants to answer to the charges in the press? He wants to campaign for a leadership position while asking other leaders to step down? He appears to me like a very bad leader. How did he ever get the current position in the MDC?

You people, you respond like people who are running scared. You seem not to understand the meaning of true democracy. Free speech and personal views are tenets of true democracy. You are evidently averse to these. Mangoma was simply expressing his views and those are his democratic rights. Is your party a truly Movement for Democratic Change when you do not want that change to happen in your party? How ironic! You do not even know that charity begins at home.

MANGOMA should know that the fact that do to others as you wold have them do to you. That is politics so he should be prepared to defend himself and come out clean rather than playing the blame game.Mangoma is busy conducting meetings fighting against the democratically elected leader Cde Richard TSVANGIRAI wani?now he cant imagine the same happenning to him.Poor MANGOMA!!!!!!What he has started requires him to be a man not a cry baby.Mangoma should also know that it is naive of him to take his party to courts at such a time.Political scores are not settled in courts.THE COURTS MAY RULE IN YO FAVOUR but yu will get into political oblivion...we are watching!!!

Mangoma and his millions of supporters: a. The first million - Pishai Muchauraya b. The second million - Murindagomo c. The third million - Alex Musundire d. The forth million - Jacob Mafume e. The four and half million - Tendai Biti Versus Tsvangirai's 1.7 million plus 1 million turned away on 31 July 2103. ZANU yooneswa moto gore rino naana Mangoma

Courage - 28 March 2014

Mr Mangoma should form his own party like Ncube and see how cold it is out there. He is being charged for taking party issues straight to the media rather than waiting for his hearing to diffend himself. Who is sponsoring him. MDC belongs to the people and I don't think we want leaders like Managoma who speak their mind in newspapers rather than around table. Mangoma is being sponsored to bring down the party but that won't work. MDC is far stronger without him. Go in peace vaMangoma and join either Ncube or Zanu PF, that is if Ncube is not coming back home.

Frank - 28 March 2014

Donate Mangoma to Zanu PF.
