Serial armed robber commits suicide

HARARE - Serial armed robber Simba Muchengeti has committed suicide at Shurugwi Police Station.

Muchengeti allegedly committed a spate of armed robberies in Ngundu but was recently apprehended by the police and held in detention awaiting his court appearance.

While national police spokesperson Charity Charamba said she was yet to receive information pertaining to the incident, informed police officers at the Midlands precinct said the robber asked to use the toilet where he reportedly shot himself.

The police officers on duty heard a loud bang which they believed to be a gunshot and rushed to the toilet where they found Muchengeti lying dead.

He was said to have smuggled a gun into the holding cells, and decided to take his own life.

Midlands’ police spokesperson Ellen Mukwendwe also said she did not immediately have details of the incident at the time of going to Press last night.

“I am not aware of that incident but since you have now told me I will have to look into the case and let you know in due course,” she said.

“It is unfortunate that I have not yet received the report.”

I am arrested and turned in to the Police cells. How do I continue to have a gun on my person? Is there no strip search of people who are being turned into the police cells?

I doubt this story. He was not the kind of guy to do this. Hope the family will dig deeper into this issue, people who know him are suspecting foul play.

By the way when was he arrested? How long has he been in police custody?

Chirima - 21 March 2014

With searching the day the guy is taken in and visitors being searched, i believe he did not have means of shooting self, without prison officers' help.

with the measures taken by police when one is detained in the cells such as taking off your shoes, removing belts, removing bras (for women) one wonders how someone can be able to smuggle a gun with him in such a place....

surely with that kind of seach which the police do to even odnary people is it practical that. they donot search someone whom they are suppecting to be any armed robber , i am not supporting Simba cause i donot know how he was living .but we must have the truth from the police who arrested this young gentleman .as quite as he was and as learned as he was and as humble as he was i am quite shocked i hope the truth we will come out one day for the benefit of the family ,to the Muchengeti family i just want to say please be strong and dig for the truth
