Serial rapist jailed 37 years

HARARE - A 31-year-old serial rapist from Epworth was yesterday jailed 37 years on six counts of rape.

Pedzisai Chiringwa lured unsuspecting Harare women to his crime scene in Letombo, Harare before raping them.

Harare magistrate Fadzai Mtombeni sentenced Chiringwa to 45 years imprisonment before suspending eight years on condition of good behaviour.

In mitigation, Chiringwa pleaded with the court to forgive him because he was the bread winner in his family.

“I have a wife and two children whom I provide for and I fear that they will suffer if I am incarcerated,” he said. “I am asking for God’s mercy and for him to pardon me for the crimes I committed.”

An HIV test proved that he was positive. One of his victims fainted in the gallery during an announcement of his HIV results.

Prosecutor Daniel Muchimbiri urged the court to sentence Chiringwa to 20 years for each of the counts he was facing, because he had endangered the lives of the three witnesses by exposing them to HIV and sexually transmitted diseases.

“Accused committed the offence knowing that he was HIV positive but did not use any form of protection. Such serial rapists spreading such a deadly disease cannot be condoned,” he said

Muchimbiri proved that on July 11 last year, at around 5pm, Chiringwa met a 26-year-old Kuwadzana woman in town and proposed love to her.

He asked her to accompany him to Greendale where he intended to collect a vehicle.

They went to Letombo Reservoirs where he grabbed the complainant from the back and raped her. He demanded cash and was given $200 and a Nokia cellphone.

The woman escaped naked and was assisted by people gathered at a nearby church before reporting the matter to the police.

On August 2 last year around 2 pm, Chiringwa met a 31-year-old woman at Vehicle Inspection Department in Eastlea in Harare where she was doing a road test to get a driver’s licence.

Chiringwa approached the woman and told her he had connections with VID managers and could assist her get a driver’s licence.

He told her they would travel to Greendale to meet the manager and when they arrived at Tenda Bus Stop, he led complainant to Letombo Reservoirs.

He grabbed her from the back and raped her.

On February 16 this year, Chiringwa met a Waterfalls woman in town and asked her to accompany him to Greendale to collect his car. He led her to Letombo Reservoirs again, where he grabbed her by the neck and subsequently raped her.

The woman struggled and escaped the first time but Chiringwa threatened her with a knife before raping her again.

Women so easily fooled. May they be able to use brains than their waist when thinking. Whilst I don't condone rape but these 3 women were also very silly.

Women and girls should not be easily lured by strangers. I have learnt that nothing comes cheap in this life. My aunts and mothers out there teach the girl child about courtship and that it is a process!!!!
