Corruption pulling us down

EDITOR — “Zimbabwe’s problems are unique” is a common refuge and refrain in habitual excuse makers.

Are they really unique? Zimbabwe’s diversity of language, habits, religions, ethos and culture can be a reason for the chronic underdevelopment that it has been battling for the last 34 years. This diversity in fact, should be enjoyed and cherished.

Some people justify Zimbabwe’s status as a poor country and point it out as the prime reason  for its lack of development.  .

However, have they ever wondered, as to what exactly, that keeps us backward?

If they would spare a thought, they would know that it is not poverty, given its abundance of rich mineral wealth, but sheer ignorance, immorality and corruption that pulls us down. Many times we hear people say “we are a young democracy and we need time to grow up”. These are growing pains. The sad part is that these are pains are on account of not making an effort to grow up.

How will we see a healthy adulthood if we are afflicted with cancer in our childhood?

All we do is justify our backwardness and shy away from doing anything constructive to address the problems. Corruption and not prostitution, is the oldest profession.
