Harare councillors give Mahachi ultimatum

HARARE - Harare city councillors have given Town Clerk Tendai Mahachi two weeks to pay workers outstanding salaries and deal with defeated Zanu PF youth chairman Jim Kunaka.

Kunaka has taken personal possession of the council’s revenue collection in Mbare pocketing at least $4 000 daily, while the rest of other council employees have gone for more than two months without salaries.

Deputy Mayor, councillor Thomas Muzuva said there was no reason why Mahachi should not bring Kunaka a grade 16, lowest grade worker, to book as the latter no longer held a position in Zanu PF.

“There are sectors where council should be collecting money, for example in Mbare where Jim Kunaka now owns,” he said.

“We have thousands of market stalls, where is the money going? Jim is pocketing $4 000 at Mbare terminus everyday as there are 40 buses which pay $10 each.

“Why is he being given the freedom to do what he wants with the city’s revenue. Why is he untouchable?” he said.

Councillor Panganai Charumbira said Kunaka was not a council employee but a warlord.

“We are not talking about an ordinary man here but a strongman who is well connected, a warlord,” he said.

Kunaka became topical after human resources committee chairman councillor Chikombo gave Mahachi a two week lifeline to mobilise funds to pay workers.

“Your worship if the town clerk fails to pay workers he would have failed to execute his duties,” Chikombo said.

He said employees needed motivation to work and questioned how council expected workers to report for work without being given money.

Councillor Luckson Mukunguma said the town clerk was promoting thievery among employees, as they know the source of money.

“The town clerk and his team are encouraging people to be thieves because they know where to get money,” he said.

And then the president wants us to bring him evidence that Kunaka is stealing from the people, like the evidence he also wants for Chombo to be prosecuted. What other evidence would one want to reinforce the thinking that zanu pf is a janjaweed and not a government. Where in the civilised world would you have a man behaving with such impunity and not face arrest? Even in lawless Mexico they do try to arrest lawbreakers. Its clear this Kunaka thug knows a lot about Mugabe and his cronnies in zanu pf, to be arrested. As long as we have sanctions on us in the form of Mugabe and his thugs, who devour and binge until they puke while the country is burning, then forget about any economic turn around or eradication of corruption for corruption is zanu pf itself. Its very unfortunate that even the opposition party that had promised so much hope for the people is behaving like the animal farm, a replica of zanu pf. May the Almighty have mercy on us, for man will never be merciful.

$4,000 a day for 30 day month equals $120,000.00. And I presume it is tax free-not taxed. He has joined the party known as "Salarygate"

we nare now tired of the tinkering man,the so called Dr Mahachi, better known in council circles as "THE TOWN CROOK".who even dares Parliament by producing a 2008 payslip in Sisyphian act meant to hide his sins(salary and perks). The city fathers should have told him that they are not paying him and his entourage of dacoits(Top executive)if he acn not pay us.the brigands must be fired.

i wish we had such people in Zesa to push the CEO and his Minister to pay the workers due from 2012. When the morale in the camp is low the team always loses. ZANU Pf is in the last phase of existance.
