Comedy clubs to tour Masvingo, Mutare

HARARE - Simuka Comedy Club and Umahlekisa Comedy Club will hold shows in several Zimbabwean towns and cities with the aim of identifying new talented comedians.

Victor “Doc Vikela” Mpofu, one of the founding members of Simuka, said that the nationwide tour will kick off in Masvingo at Charles Austin Theatre on March 14 and 15.

“The show will be held with the help of the Masvingo Drama Club and will provide some space for new comic acts from Masvingo,” said Doc Vikela.

“The show is over two nights, March 14 and 15.

“We will hold a workshop on the 15th for aspiring comics.

“On behalf of the invasion team, we promise the people of Masvingo a great show.”

After the Masvingo show, the two comedy clubs will tour the eastern border city of Mutare and afterwards make plans to take the show to other areas.

“This is an ongoing programme we are doing and in line with it, we will be in Mutare in April. We are taking stand-up comedy to the people,” said Doc Vikela.

Michael Khetani Banda, the artistic director of the Charles Austin Theatre, is looking forward to the forthcoming show to be hosted by his organisation.

“Laughter is the best medicine and so we are eagerly awaiting our portion of healing.

“Doc Vikela, Clive Chigubhu, Ntando Van Moyo and Gift the Cracker are men who deeply know their craft and the Charles Austin Theatre is very honoured to have them do their magic within its walls”.

Three-year-old Simuka Comedy, the brainchild of Simba “The Comic King” Kakora and Victor “Doc Vikela” Mpofu, has risen to become one of Zimbabwe’s leading comedy brands.

Umahlekisa is the only comedy club in Bulawayo and has been in operation for a year now while the Masvingo Drama Circle, formed in 1945, is responsible for running Charles Austin Theatre.
