Tsvangirai rings 62 with low-key event

HARARE - Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai celebrated his 62nd birthday at his Highlands home yesterday, surrounded by family and close friends, momentarily forgetting the raging factional wars in his party.

Officials still in good books with the MDC leader “popped in” to offer their congratulatory messages.

Luke Tamborinyoka, Tsvangirai’s spokesperson, said his boss’ birthday was a private affair.

“His birthday is just a private event and therefore should not be nationalised,” he said.

“So we had a function at home with family and friends. His birthday is not a place to slaughter 90 beasts as other people do,” said Tamborinyoka, in apparent reference to President Robert Mugabe, who was treated to 90 beasts, king size birthday cakes and an assortment of presents from his followers.

But Tsvangirai, according to his spokesperson, preferred low key celebrations.

“The president spent the day with his family. It was a quite event with some coming or calling on the phone.”

The so-called rebels calling for Tsvangirai’s ouster predictably snubbed the event.

But Tamborinyoka downplayed their absence.

“We do not do that in the MDC, no one is compelled to attend the celebrations some came or called and some did not, but it is not a big issue,” he said.

Well and good and we wish the MDC President many more. Worrying is the current goings on in MDC T and ipso facto opposition politics. Bob after his election victory said that as far as he was concerned MDC T was now history. Obviously Zanu PF were strategizing on splitting and maiming MDC T for life. They have done exactly that and Bob's prediction is 100% accurate. What is irking me is that MDC T adversaries are willing tools of its demise. So you see Zanu PF went in from both sides of the tent attacking both the blue corner and the red corner so that each corner is suspicious of the other. It is hard to fathom that the MDC T powerful secretary general Tendai Biti could abandon the principles which he has so eloquently defended or imagine that Roy Bennet and or Eddie Cross could be in the Zanu PF camp!! It does not make sense to a simple mind but this is the reality. Opposition politics is gone, Zanu PF and the Chombos of this world can do what they like and the people of Zimbabwe can go hang.

That's the proper way to celebrate one's birth day. Only ZANU-PF and North Korea turn birth days into national events.Spending millions of state funds on one man when schools have no textbooks, hospitals without medicines, civil servants earning less than five hundred dollars, roads in very bad state, malnutrition and abject poverty and THE ONLY children of God will be feasting large and drinking. Feeling pretty good in jolly mood enjoying the fruits of Zimbabwe.

@wezhira wazhara. morgan learnt his lessons well and is in the process of change. it might be too late for him but he now knows not to get too excited about all that goes well around you. 1 thing he has learnt also is not to take people for granted. he is regreting his many mistakes and we might soon see him admit openly that he has messed up in many ways. lets give a chance.

Yes the celebrations had to be low key because Save does not need asslickers when he has family and friends to celebrate with him.
