PSL 2014 season gets underway at the end of March

HARARE - The 2014 Premier Soccer League will get underway at the end of the month with defending champions Dynamos begin their title defence with an away assignment against How Mine, according to the draft released to clubs by the PSL at the weekend.

The Glamour Boys and How Mine had an early start to the season representing the country in the African Champions League and the African Confederation Cup respectively.

Calisto Pasuwa’s men have since been knocked out of Africa’s premier club competition after going down 1-0 to Congolese outfit AS Vita at the weekend while How Mine progressed to the next round.

That means DeMbare and How Mine are likely to kick off their 2014 season with a mid-week fixture since the gold miners will be involved in the Confed Cup.

This year’s fixtures will see the big clash between Highlanders and Dynamos coming during week 12 of the programme.

The Harare derby between two bitter rivals CAPS and Dynamos will come during in week 15.

Makepekepe begin their campaign with a date against newly promoted ZPC Kariba while Bulawayo giants Highlanders visit returnees Chapungu at Ascot.

Last year’s second runners-up Harare City travel to Bulawayo for their first match of the season where they take o Chicken Inn.

PSL chief executive Kenny Ndebele could not be drawn into confirming the league’s sponsors, although it seemed obvious that Delta Beverages will renew the new partnership deal for the 16-team league.

“We will announce the dates and the full calendar soon. This was a draft which was sent to the clubs,” Ndebele told the Daily News.

“We are running around trying to tie down some deals. The league sponsors, knock-out competitions and other relative information will be announced in due course.”

The PSL is still in negotiations with Delta Beverages to fund the league and also NetOne who previously funded a season's Charity Cup opener set to bankroll the Super Eight Cup after BancABC withdrawn their sponsorship.

Mbada Diamonds remain sponsors of the country's richest 16-team knock-out tourney. Two teams will be relegated at the end of the season following the amendments made to meet Fifa’s requirements.
