Mangoma's alleged attacker appears in court

HARARE - A Harare magistrate has denied bail to an MDC activist who allegedly assaulted MDC deputy treasurer-general Elton Mangoma at the party headquarters, Harvest House, last week.

Magistrate Tendai Mahwe remanded James Chidhakwa, 31, in custody to March 10.

Prosecutor Sharon Mashavira alleged that on February 15, Chidhakwa of No. 9 Knight Bruce in Milton Park in Harare, was in the company of his MDC accomplices, who are still at large.

Chidhakwa reportedly waylaid Mangoma outside Harvest House and confronted him as he tried to take refuge in MDC president, Morgan Tsvangirai’s vehicle.

Chidhakwa and his accomplices allegedly assaulted Mangoma with open hands and clenched fists.

His bled and sustained injuries. Mangoma’s spectacles valued at $300 were damaged in the attack.

Chidhakwa allegedly tore Mangoma’s shirt before he was whisked away in Morgan Tsvangirai’s vehicle.

Meanwhile, MDC elections director Dennis Murira and former deputy minister of information Murisi Zwizwai were picked up by police yesterday over the attack on Mangoma.

They were taken to the Harare Central Police Station where they had a warned and cautioned statement recorded. They have retained Benjamin Chikowere as their defence counsel.

With such overwhelming evidence you still hear dunderheads like Douglas Mwonzora defending the likes of James Chidhakwa ? It is primitive to beat any political rival. We should all take the legal route to resolve political disputes.

even a murderer like Pretorious has defence lawyers my dear brothers and sisters so there isn't anything wrong in defending an accused person

snowden - 26 February 2014

If found guilty MDC-T should do the right thing & expel Chidhakwa & anyone else convicted of this attack. They need to send the right message that violence is unacceptable!!!

saundy - 26 February 2014

These are just allegations. Are there witnessses? Is there any evidence like a video picture? Without evidence this will just serve to harass the suspects but they will not be jailed for lack of evidence.
