Chapungu fire warning shots

GWERU - Premiership returnees Chapungu fired early warning shots ahead of the upcoming season with an emphatic 5-1 win over Confederations Cup participants How Mine in a friendly match at Ascot Stadium on Sunday.

Chapungu, who are making a return to the Premiership after a lengthy stay in the second-tier leagur, have been doing well in pre-season friendlies, drawing 1-1 with Dynamos before beating Harare City 1-0 last week.

However – it was the manner in which they dismantled How Mine in an inspired first half performance in which they scored four goals – which charmed the sizeable crowd.

Former Tripple B midfielder Maxwell Mavhuto was outstanding throughout and scored one of the goals. Calisto Maheya grabbed a brace while Brighton Mugoni and Charles Murisa scored the other goals.

Thembani Masuku got the consolation for How Mine.

Chapungu coach John Nyikadzino said the big win was a huge morale booster ahead of the new season.

"The big margin win is not a fluke because we have been playing well in previous matches, but we were found wanting in terms of scoring," said Nyikadzino.

"Beating a team like How Mine with so many big name names gives our team a lot of confidence since most of them are rookies but with a lot of potential.”
