DeMbare to face 'real' Glamour Boys

JOHANNESBURG - I might be thinking too far ahead of myself but since the prospect of Dynamos meeting Mzansi champions Kaizer Chiefs became a possibility in the African Champions League tournament, I have kept praying for such a blockbuster of an encounter becoming a reality.

Amakhosi meet Liga Muculmana from Mozambique in the next round of Africa’s biggest club tournament while De Mbare play AS Vita from Kinshasa. If both Chiefs and Dynamos win their respective encounters, the two giants will clash in what should be a no-holds-barred encounter.

The two clubs have several things in common both on the field of play and off it.

Kaizer Chiefs, known as the Phefeni Glamour Boys, are wholly owned by Orlando Pirates legend Kaizer Motaung. Just like Dynamos in Zimbabwe, Chiefs is by far the most supported side and are at home wherever they play in Mzansi.

Although no one has ever documented Amakhosi’s real support base, they surely run into millions of followers. What I don’t for sure is which among the two – Dynamos or Chiefs – has the biggest following.

That last time I heard of Dynamos’s numbers was in the 80s when the then coach Shepherd Murape claimed they had seven million followers. Zimbabwe has a total population of around 15 million though that number is in doubt with millions of more Zimbos scattered around the globe.

Mzansi’s total population hover around 51 million and with most football supporters swearing by the black and gold of Amakhosi colours, it is no surprise if half of Mzansi’s population are Chiefs supporters. The Motaung dynasty claims that one in every two South Africans supports Chiefs.

Then there is the issue of Glamour Boys! I grew up knowing the only Glamour Boys were Dynamos but when I moved down South, was reminded the only Glamour team in Africa was Kaizer Chiefs.

Much as I tried to argue for Dynamos, I had no territorial advantage and have since given in. I have come to accept that the first glamour team are Amakhosi and the other one comes from somewhere in the dusty streets of Mbare.

How nice will it be if the two teams were to clash for top honours on the continent!

I don’t want to jump the gun as any of the two might be knocked out and dash my dreams. But boy, let us pray that such an encounter comes to fruition.

It will bring a lot of excitement on the field of play and off it.

It will almost take a shape of a battle between Zimbabwe and Mzansi.

And add the fact that the Zimbabwean trio of Knowledge Musona, Kingston Nkhatha and Willard Katsande are actually the driving force behind Chiefs’ current dominance, will add some spice to the encounter.

The three musketeers are proving a hit with Mzansi’s runaway log leaders and defending Absa Premiership champions and here and there still mimic the Zorai Butter celebrations here.

Amakhosi are currently sitting unchallenged at the top of the pack with 43 points with second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns nine points adrift; though the Patrice Motsepe-bankrolled millionaires have two games in hand.

Chiefs are still unbeaten in all competitions this year and this is mainly due to the Zimbabwean trio’s remarkable form.

It might be a still born perspective but a clash between the Glamour Boys of Zimbabwe against what Mzansi people call the real African Glamour Boys might turn out to be a clash of the century on the Cosafa Region if not on the continent.

The clash has all the ingredients to bring the two countries to a standstill.

I really hope it becomes a reality.

Panashe please note the following; Orlando Pirates are the defending champions in the ABSA Premiership, you cannot say Chiefs are by far the most supported yet there isnt much difference between them and Orlando, there is almost mothing in common between deMbare and Chiefs because deMbare are trully by far the most supported team in an African league, their achievements in the field of play are far ahead of Chiefs and obviously Chiefs will count themselves luck if they win even down there in Mzansi
