Ex-US congressman Reynolds remanded in custody

HARARE - Former United States of America (USA) congressman Mel Jay Reynolds has been remanded in custody after being arraigned before the Harare Magistrates’ Court on charges of contravening Immigration and Censorship Acts.

Reynolds, 62, was not asked to plead to the charges yesterday, after appearing on two separate records.

His lawyer Arthur Gurira applied for the two records to be postponed to tomorrow in order for him to get further instructions from his client.

Prosecutors told the court that the American was arrested on Monday, after immigration officials got information that he was illegally staying in the country.

It is the State’s case that Reynolds entered the country through the Plumtree border on November 13 last year and was booked at Bronte Hotel in Harare.

Prosecutor Michael Reza claims Reynolds was on a business visit and was supposed to have left the country by November 27, last year.

He was, however, authorised to stay further in the country until December 10.

According to State papers, Reynolds did not seek authority to further extend his stay in the country.

I have seen this gentleman wining and dining with government officials and ambassadors at the Meikles hotel on numerous occasions. He always had at least 3 bodyguards/assistants with him and his room was always guarded. He must have disappointed one of the Chefs, because he has been dealing in Zimbabwe for years now.
