Bob90 Super Cup final postponed

HARARE - The epic Bob90 Super Cup final battle between reigning champions Dynamos and Highlanders that had been scheduled for Sunday has been postponed, organisers of the tournament confirmed yesterday.

The development means that the football fans will have to wait longer to witness the battle pitting the two traditional powerhouses of Zimbabwe football.

Dynamos by virtue of being the defending champions were given a bye into the final while Bosso beat Harare City 2-1 in a play-off at the Barbourfields Stadium last Sunday.

Charles Mabika, the spokesperson for the tournament’s organising committee said they have shifted the final to a later date to be announced in due course.

“The final will no longer be held this weekend as earlier indicated. We will advise of the new dates at a later stage,” said Mabika.

“More people will be concentrating on the celebrations and we decided to avoid counter attraction by moving the dates forward. We will also use this period to put more logistics in place.”

But with Dynamos’ involvement in the African Champions League, the final is now likely to be played not later than the weekend of March 15 and 16.

The Glamour Boys host DR Congo champions AS Vita in the first leg of the first round qualifier during the weekend of February 28 and March 2.

The return leg will be played on the weekend of March 7-9 in Kinshasa.

When DeMbare returns from DR Congo, it is not yet clear whether the Premier Soccer League 2014 season would start the following weekend which could also affect the staging of the Bob90 Super Cup final.

There is also the traditional season curtain raiser tournament, the NetOne Charity Shield tournament which will also make the schedule complicated for the Bob90 Super Cup organisers.

Although Dynamos are unlikely to compete in the Charity Shield owing to their frosty relationship with the NetOne, it is likely that Highlanders might be involved in the tournament.

Remember Netone is the same company which scuttled the golden chance of getting mega league sponsorship from Strive Masiyiwa's Econet back then. My heart bleeds to see how much other countries are benefiting from the magnanimity of the son of our own country.
