Polygamous hubby fears spouse will leave him

HARARE - A woman yesterday dragged her polygamous husband before the Harare Civil Court claiming he bashes her because she wants a divorce.

Marvis Matumba told magistrate Tafadzwa Muvhami that she no longer loves her husband, Shingirai Chibanda, but he assaults her each time she says she wants to leave.

She was seeking a protection order against him.

Matumba alleged that Chibanda was married to another woman but was using force to cling to her.

“My husband is married to another woman and is no longer maintaining his family,” complained Matumba.

“I want the court to separate us because whenever I leave him or tell him that I no longer love him, he assaults me. I want him to go and live with his new wife.”

Chibanda did not dispute his wife’s allegations.

He urged the court to grant the order saying he will not be prejudiced in any way if the court ordered him to stop abusing her.

Before granting the order, magistrate Muvhami told the couple that the court was not there to separate or divorce couples but to make sure that peace prevails in the country.

He advised the two to take the legal channel if they wanted a divorce.

Muvhami ordered Chibanda to stop verbally and physically abusing his wife or threatening her in any way.
