210 districts endorse Tsvangirai

HARARE - Opposition MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who has been shrugging off internal calls for him to step down, yesterday won overwhelming support to stay on from the party’s rank-and-file.

Following his drubbing by Zanu PF leader President Robert Mugabe in last year’s elections, Tsvangirai has been under pressure to step down from the party leadership to allow the party to reinvent itself.

However, the former Prime Minister, who has indicated that he has no intention to immediately relinquish his post, yesterday proved to his internal party foes that he had the support of the grassroots after receiving the overwhelming confidence from the party’s 210 district chairpersons.

Addressing the media after Tsvangirai’s meeting with the chairpersons, Douglas Mwonzora, the MDC spokesperson, said the party was embarking on a grassroots restructuring exercise from branch level to provincial structures.

The meeting had been called by Tsvangirai to outline the party’s agenda for this year.

Mwonzora said while the district chairpersons had resolved to remain united under Tsvangirai, there was a possibility of an early congress in 2016, though not necessarily an extraordinary one.

“In their submissions, the MDC district chairpersons resolved not to be deterred by what happened on July 31, 2013, and said the party will remain focused on its principal goal, which is to deliver the people of Zimbabwe from poverty and misery”, Mwonzora said.

“They all unanimously resolved to remain united under the leadership of president Morgan Tsvangirai.

“To that end, a programme of restructuring all our structures from grassroots, the branches, wards, districts and provincial structures is going to be embarked upon with haste.”

Mwonzora said the meeting took notice that Zanu PF had taken advantage of calls for leadership renewal in the party to sow seeds of division amongst the party leadership.

Flanked by the MDC leader’s spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka, Mwonzora claimed that Zanu PF had even come up with its preferred MDC leadership which it was allegedly publishing on social networks.

He claimed there were two lists of the preferred party hierarchy, designed to alienate certain leaders, bring distrust and initiate infighting in the MDC.

“To that end, the leadership of the MDC shall as has always been the case, be determined by congress, whether this congress is held in 2016 or earlier if the national council so desires”, Mwonzora said.

The MDC spokesperson said Tsvangirai had also proffered an eight-point plan which he said has the solutions to what he termed the crises of legitimacy, governance and expectations bedevilling the country.

“The plan to national revival is; engaging in a national dialogue where all national stakeholders participate in economic revival, political and economic reforms, social sector, global engagement, national cohesion, holding free, fair and credible elections and infrastructure rehabilitation,” he said.

While Mwonzora maintained  the party was not going to take disciplinary action against those calling for the veteran opposition politician to go, the Daily News on Sunday witnessed some party youths loyal to Tsvangirai flushing out and assaulting youths from Mbare and Chitungwiza whom they accused of pushing for the MDC leader’s ouster.

Speculation was rife prior to the meeting that it had been called to decide the fate of party deputy treasurer-general Elton Mangoma, who is accused to plotting to oust Tsvangirai after penning a damning report urging the ex-Premier to relinquish the party leadership in favour of party vice-president Thokozani Khupe.

Mangoma was manhandled by MDC youths as he emerged from a meeting accompanied by Tsvangirai.

His jacket and shirt were torn in the scuffle while his spectacles were damaged and he sustained a swollen lip.

The meeting with the district chairpersons, Mwonzora said, was a prelude to a series of “national engagement meetings by the president and entire MDC leadership with the people of Zimbabwe at all levels which are going to commence”.

Provincial chairpersons, youths and provincial women assemblies all attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, a buoyed Tsvangirai will address a rally at Glen Norah Community Hall in Harare today.

Mwonzora must stop blaming ZANU PF for every ill befalling his party. Some of the problems besetting MDC-T are due to the failure of leadership. Though many had hopped that Morgan Tsvangirai would be different from the ZANU PF leader, he has disappointed many as he lacks democracy, decency and discernment. Allegations that the fellow has been taking liberty with party funds hasn't helped his case either. Instead of answering every allegation against him, it seems Morgan's response was to mobilise district chairpersons and the deranged youths against party rivals. The trick does not work in the 21st century. People are now more educated and wiser than they were in 1980. We are now seeing the last days of Morgan Tsvangiorai as leader of the opposition. The winds of change will definitely sweep him away!

The headline should be "Tsvangirai endorses himself to continue as leader in front of 210 districts who were roped in to witness the event" or “Beleaguered Tsvangirai ropes in 210 districts to cling on to leadership” or “The plot thickens - Tsvangirai engages violent thugs to beat up leadership rival” or “Tsvangirai watches as Mangoma is beaten up by thugs” or “Tsvangirai's supporters waylay Mangoma at party headquarters” or “Tsvangirai tacitly approves beating up of Mangoma” or “Mangoma given hiding by thugs in Tsvangirai's presence” or “The gloves are off - Mangoma beaten up by thugs while Tsvangirai watches” or “Tsvangirai turns blind eye to Mangoma's assault at party headquarters” or “Mangoma lured to 'meeting' then beaten up by Tsvangirai's thugs” or “Leadership battle gets ugly - Mangoma beaten up in Tsvangirai's presence”.

What free and fair elections do you still continue to talk about Tsvangirai? Please give us a break. As Chamu mangwanja says, you really cannot descern things. Tsvangirai understand that even if an election is called for today you still cannot beat Zanu pf, and you will even be beaten by a much larger margin. Can you not see the effects of fear instilled in the minds of the people by Zanu pf particularly in June 2008 when you chose to abandon the people and hide in Botswana, which is a time when the people needed you the most? You left your supporters leaderless and they were butchered by Zanu pf maggots. You awfully showed that you are a fearful and non-resolute leader meaning when the going gets really tough you can't be trusted to continue to lead the sruggle. wakadududza, the same way you did when zanu pf won the 31 july election, ende tinonzwa kuti even during the liberation struggle you did the same. Of course kutya kunowanikwa muvanhu ndokusaka tirikuti apa pakuda those who can withstand Zanu pf machinations with vigorness that goes beyond the timidity you have exhibited so far. if you didn't know, Zanu pf intelligence is now fully aware that to undo MDC-T they simply drive you to that hottest point of political power contestation knowing fully well that when you get to that point you breakdown and retreat. If you didn't know, MDC-T was annihilated by Zanu pf way back in june 2008 , and for as long as you don't realise the need for you to step aside and let a new leader with a new thinking take over, MDC-T is doomed to opposition politics forever. Don't be fooled by those rogue supporters of yours whose "loyalty" to your leadership is simply for personal gain. Wake up from your deep slumber Mr Tsvangirai and let a new leader take over for posterity's sake. After all as founder you will remain a key figure in the party providing inspiration needed to move it foward. Look beyond your person Mr. Morgan

MANGOMA WAS BEATEN UP BY TSVANGIRAI'S THUGS (STORMTROOPERS). TYPICALLY OF THE GUTTER DAILY NEWSPAPER, IT CONTEMPTUOUSLY!, SWEPT THE ISSUE UNDER ITS DIRTY AND DISGUSTING POLITICAL RUG. MOST UNBIASED ANALYSTS ARE THE VIEW IS THAT TSVANGIRAI IS A DICTATOR AND THAT HIS SITUATION IS WORSENED BY THE FACT THAT HE FEARS THE EDUCATED AMONG THE LEADERSHIP. IRONICALLY THE IMAGE OF A BEATEN MANGOMA REVOKES THAT OF TSVANGIRAI AFTER THE THOROUGH POLITICAL BAPTISM OF FIRE. THE SHORT OF IT IS THAT TSVANGIRAI WAS ENDORSED BY FRIGHTENED POLITICAL CHAIRMEN. WHO WOULD BLAME THEM KNOWING WHAT TSVINGIRAI'S STORMTROOPERS WOULD DO TO THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE CHANGE.POLITICALLY MDC SHOULD STAND FOR THE MOVEMENT OF DOOMED CLOWNS.

Democracy means the masses deciding who they want to lead them, not Mangoma deciding for the masses. Mangoma should wait for the Congress where the voice of the masses will decide on the leadership.

The headline should have read 210 idiots endorse Open Zip. For quality and balanced news read the herald. But if you just want to laugh and weigh the level of stupidity amongst some Zimbozi, read this paper. There is no editorial staff at this paper, that is why Makandiwa almost sunk this crap.

I very sympathise with Mangoma being flogged in public as things happened on Friday but I think these guys brought this upon themselves. I think Mangoma is the first one who tried to use unorthodox means of removing Tsvangirai from power, now Tsvangirai is hitting back, now these guys are crying foul. Remember Tsvangirai was elected at a congress to lead the party for another 5 years not so long ago. When he was elected there was no condition put to say if 'if you loose the upcoming elections we will remove you'. So why are these guys now in a hurry to remove Tsvangirai from power? They must come out in the open and reveal their ambitions otherwise they must go and form their MDC Mangoma, MDC-B etc, they must not want to ride on Tsvangirai's clout, they must start from scratch like he did.
